Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

I’ll try to take some photos of the youngsters next time I have a break in the weather it’s supposed to rain for most of the next week. It’s rather unusual for this time of year here in Idaho to see a chance for this much moisture.

I don’t have any recent pics but here is a newly hatched chick from a few weeks back.

Some rough snaps of a few of my chicks.

I will try to get good photos of most of the chicks on my next days off weather permitting.

Here are a few (horrible) photos of the youngest group of chicks. I was moving them into a grow out pen and they were not happy about it or my presence nor were they excited about my small dog being with me.

A lot of the girls are looking like this pullet. I’m afraid their heads and necks will be a little to light I like a slightly darker ton of wheat for the girls.

This little guy is the only chick I got from my older hens. I’m going to keep a close eye on him and hope he develops nicely. So far I like the tone of his hackles I think they will lighten up just enough to be where I like them on a male. His comb is also off to a great start pretty with even points. His leg feathering is also about where I like it.

For the season I got 18 pullets and 15 cockerels.

We received two mixes from a friend who has a farm and had a hen hatch them and take off. One boy and one girl. No idea what the parents look like or even what kind of chickens she keeps. They are 11 weeks now and I am thinking they are either somehow pure marans or have very strong maran genes. Please weigh in!

The pic of the male is from yesterday, he has a lot of blue but the pic doesn’t show it. The pic of the female is a few weeks old but apart from size she hasn’t changed much.
