Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

We got this chick at a feed store recently, and it was labeled as a white Jersey Giant. Now, we're thinking it is a French Wheaten. Could we be right? If so, is there any way to tell now if it's a pullet or a cockeral? Or maybe we need to wait until the chest feathers start coming in...

Hi, have been reading through this post as I've two French Marans chicks. 7 weeks old. (The hatching eggs we bought were labelled French maran.) This one chick is very dark.. wondered if anyone here could say if we can tell yet if it is a cockerel or just a dark, perhaps not a great example of a, female. Can anyone shed any light?

Good morning and happy Sunday!
You may want to move this to "what breed or gender is this" forum. You will get more traffic that way, this thread does not seem to be very active. Good close ups of each bird showing their combs will help. I suspect your first chick pictured may be a cockerel. Good luck with your babies, they are gorgeous!😊

These chicks appear to be Male. In the USA we do not use the term French Marans unless they are imports from France

I have a question for the blue wheaten marans experts out there. I am growing out a good looking batch of blue wheatens, just one of the hens has some dark tipping around her neck. See pictures below. I have two questions:
1- What are your thoughts about the tips being black
2- what is the correct terminology used to describe the spots on the tip of the feather in this situation?
Thanks 🙏🏼

After a three year hiatus I now have the opportunity to get back into breeding. I got a dozen lovely Blue Wheaten/Wheaten eggs from Gypsy Hen out of Oklahoma.

I did keep three of my hens from my original flock I hope to get a few chicks out of them next year with the best rooster i get out of my hatch.
