On March 24th, Illinois lawmakers will hold a hearing on House Bill 4764, a proposal that could protect the right to keep backyard chickens across the state.

The bill would allow residents to raise hens on their property while still giving local governments the ability to set reasonable rules for things like sanitation, setbacks, and flock size. Importantly, it would also prevent towns from requiring neighbor permission just to keep chickens.

This hearing is a key step in the process, where legislators hear testimony and public input before deciding whether the bill moves forward.

If you care about local food, self-reliance, and clear, fair regulations—this is an important moment to pay attention and get involved.

Please write to your local Illinois state representatives and senators and tell them how important this bill is to you.

Then visit the ILGA Website: Go to ilga.gov and look for the GA Dashboard (often highlighted in red) or go directly to my.ilga.gov.
