The Collonca is a naturally clean faced, rumpless (tailless), blue egg laying fowl. The Queteros is tailed, has ear tuffs and usually lays a pinkish brown egg. Many years ago, the cross between the Collonca and the Queteros resulted in what we now know as the Araucana. The worldwide interest in the special traits of the Araucana can be directly attributed to an article which the National Geographic Magazine published in April 1927. Another South American type of chicken, the Quechua, was used in the development of the Ameraucana, a second blue egg laying breed which, like the Araucana, is recognized by the American Poultry Association, and the American Bantam Association. The Ameraucana and the Easter Egger are tailed chickens. Easter Egger is a term used to refer to a chicken of mixed or unknown background, usually sold by hatcheries and feed stores under the name Araucana or Ameraucana to hobbyists who are not aware of the difference. There are a number of important differences between the Araucana and the Ameraucana with the only commonality being that they both have pea combs and lay blue or blue/green eggs. The APA and ABA Araucana breed standards call for a pea combed, rumpless, tufted, blue egg laying bird. This was the original Chilean bird that drew so much attention in 1914 when first discovered and again in April 1927 issue of the National Geographic Magazine. |
