This is good, practical advice for city and small acreage owners looking to both manage and put their birds to good use. May have to consider some bantams :)

This is a brilliant solution. I was considering using piping heat tape but this actually seems like a better option at a similar set up price.

What a bunch of work you just did for the benefit of your chickens, and ours. Well done! For those who want to geek out on maximizing their nutrition, you've offered some really nice data here.

I will say that what this shows me is that despite the notion that somebody knows exactly what chickens need, it is very likely that nobody really does. Just like the people RDAs we are guessing. Nobody has the kind of money to invest in chicken research that it would actually take to know this for sure.

I enjoyed this article mostly because I enjoy it when people put their thinking caps on and use them. I do believe that fermentation helps to make nutrients more bioavailable, but only can say that with any confidence in fermented foods for people. I appreciate that you've undertaken some critical thought about this process for chickens.

I will likely give fermenting a try at some point but perhaps will consider it as an occasional thing rather than full time. Balance is usually the key to most things.

Enjoyed your writing style and sense of humor :)

Thanks for reading and rating the article. I'm glad you got the humor aspect. I'm still feeding mash ;)

I was curious about whether the cats next door, who keep sizing up my chickens while in their runs, were a true threat. This article, which is nicely written and to the point, helped me to decide that though they are friend in the mouse department, they may indeed be foe in the foul department.

What a nice coop you've built! I had no real carpentry experience either when I started my coop - and I also have a little pile of things that sounded like a good idea but turned out not to work well or look quite right. Gate hardware in particular :)
