I have a 20'x 25' old garage that I use as a wood shop. I plan on putting up a wall in the back and making a 8'x 20' coop. I currently have 14 hens. I have them in the barn. They live in a 12'x 16' wire cage in the barn, I have cut a door and made them a run there. Most of the time they free range on my little 3 acre farm. I live in Illinois, the winters are very cold, snowy, and windy. I have to wrap the entire cage with heavy plastic for the winter months. I know it's not the best, but I do what I can to make them comfortable. I like your setup. I hope mine will be half as nice. Thanks for posting. Kim

I am so glad that I found this article. This is my first winter with chickens, so I've been reading everything I can find on how to take the best care of them and keep them happy. I've got all cold hardy chickens, but, the temp has been -17 to -30 at night. So, thank you so much for writing this. All newbies need to read it. I will recommend it to anyone that I think needs to know!
