Building A Treadle Chicken Feeder

Thank you for these plans!! We found a rat in our coop this morning so I’ve been researching all morning about treadle feeders but we have two coops and I cannot afford to pay almost $400 for good ones and I’d worry about it closing on their heads. This one looks so much better and my son is a woodworker so I’ll be buying the supplies today and asking my teen to make us 2 of these!!

What a great article. I built this feeder quite some time ago and it works brilliantly.
There were 2 modifications I had to make:
1. I had an issue with mice squeezing in from the side of the lid. I added 1/4 round to each side to completely seal it and that stopped the mice.
2. The chickens would flick the feed with their beaks out to the side and there would be feed everywhere. I added chicken wire across the opening of the feeder and that stopped that behaviour.

The first build looks absolutely beautiful and making adjustments to make it work even better in the second build was great! Providing a cost list was nice! I'd love to build something like this for our girls! Those plans are wonderful and easy to read/follow!

Although I don't have the skill to make this feeder myself, I wish I did. It is well written and has detailed, clear instructions and complete diagrams for visual aid. The whole project is easy to understand, as it is divided into steps that would be simple to follow.
I'm going to show this article to my husband. He knows how to make things like this!!
