Petunia, My 3 year-old Red Star Hen

We bought Petunia as a week-old chick from the local market along with Maybelle and Bonnie. The next step was introducing them to the pullets we aleady had - Martha, Louise and Amber. Thankfully that went very well and they are good friends to this day. When she was less than two weeks old, Petunia loved to sleep in a bundle of cloth - hung from a low hanging branch. The wind rocked the bundle gently and that was how she slept!

As she matured, her friendly nature started to wear off and she became somewhat of a bully. It took the next two years to stop the pecking that ensued, but we succeeded - finally!

Here she is trying to stare me down in their chicken run, where she literally rules the roost!

Of course, keeping other hens in check all day can be tiring.

Here I can't tell if she's looking for bugs or trying to scratch her way out into the backyard.

So that's Petunia. Hope you enjoyed!
