Describe 'Coop on Wheels' here
This is our first post to this site. When David & Gloria (D G Farms) decided to get chickens, I wanted to go with free range chickens and we decided to build a chicken coop on wheels that could move around the yard. I found a small 4 Ft x 5 ft tailer for sale on the web that has a expanded steel floor which will work well for the poop to fall through to the yard. I built the little A Frame with the nest boxes accessable from outside. Sliding door on the end which is being Automated to open and close on a photocell. The milk box on the front houses the car battery for portable power for coop door. We are going to add a Solar charger to the roof in the near future. Got the 3 hens the other day and keeping them in the coop for a few days to get settled in to the new digs. then well turn them loose. Day 4, Turned the chickens loose this morning, they hung out close to the coop most of the morning till it got hot, then they wondered over to a big cedar tree and hung out there all day. I tied the dog out on a leash not far from the coop to watch the chickens and get use to them. one hen likes to roam a little ways away, so off did me and Hazel the dog and got her to come back for a while. She still wonders off, but well in site except in the brush. Well see how they come back to the coop tonight. the Door is automated to a photo cell. I have some details of door to post soon and a wiring diagram for anyone interested. The photo Cell is a 12 volt DC photocell switch 054-07215 from Solar Conduit,$42.
The Car Antenna is from Sonic Electronix-44PW-22, $60. A Battery From Walmart to fit in the Box, bigger the better.
