Important High-Protein Foods for Chickens During Molting

A very informative article! An easy read too.
Excellent article to bring attention to the need for extra protein during molting season. I have seen huge differences in feather growth on years I add extra protein to their diet, especially from the meat category. Lots of amino acids and omegas in meat that aren't present in plant based foods. Wonderful job!
My go to for all the information I need!
Great article.
I noticed my flock's plumage grows in nicely when I offer higher protein during molt. No more Naked Nelly! I offer my Chickens, Pigeons, Doves, Guineas & Cockatiels various seeds, grains & All Flock, with calcium & grit in separate feeders on the side. The Pigeon grain I buy also has a variety of grains mixed in it, peas, lentils, etc. Shelled Sunflower seeds & Spanish peanuts, live mealworms, cabbage, squash, shredded mix of carrots & celery, fresh chickweed, warm cooked oatmeal with raisins, scrambled eggs, blueberries or melons are also scarfed down with great enthusiasm, along with protein feed. 😋 Love this article to remind me of the various sources of protein & why it's important. 👍
Great examples for extra protein treats and why it’s needed. Another choice is canned tuna and canned cat food. Its highly important to keep in mind that anything beyond a balanced commercial diet is a treat and should be limited as to not exceed 10% of daily ration per bird to prevent obesity and ill health.
Thank you for the examples of snacks. I didn't know chickens like animal carcasses 😳 so if I cook a whole chicken, I can throw the remains out back for them? What about store bought eggs? My hens have stopped laying because they are molting, can I give them store bought eggs?

**please excuse the questions, if they aren't allowed, I'll look them up in a bit

I'll give my chickens these foods next time they molt. Tony is currently molting so I'll feed her these foods. This article is a must if your chickens are molting. Well detailed as to why you should give your chickens these foods.
A balanced diet of a pelleted/crumbled feed is best. Do not over feed treats.
Good suggestions for protein supplementation! I do believe it would be beneficial to reinforce the 90/10 rule of feeding somewhere within the article
When mine need a boost of protein I usually give them an unsalted can of tuna. :)
Great article on foods for a protein boost for the flock when they’re molting!
