Celebrating my one year anniversary of keeping chickens this week (June 7th) so thought I'd share my flock. As I type I have chicks hatching under a broody with the eventual goal of raising a sustainable flock for both eggs and meat. I started with 8 Buff Orpingtons purchased from a local farm and recently lost one to unknown causes. We allow them to range over a 3/4 acre fenced in area, 1/3 grass, 1/3 woods, 1/3 overgrown pasture that they mostly share (we have one lab with a very high prey drive that doesn't like to share).
The day they came home:
First time outside:
Meeting our calmer dog:
When I started to realize I had a roo on my hands (now a proud father):
Growing up!
Sharing a treat (apparently my lab likes corn too!)
Hanging out this spring on our freshly planted barrel:
And finally coming full circle - new chicks from our own Roo and hens, hatched by a broody!
