Introduction

Whether you have a new batch of chicks you’re struggling to name, are tired of the basic names, or realized your adult chickens could use some names, you’ve come to the right place! I have named 50+ birds and consider myself a bit of an expert. Get ready to look at the three main ways I have found to name your chickens!

#1 Letting It Come To You

Sometimes you just look at a chicken, and a name will come to you. Sometimes the name may be influenced by something that recently happened, and sometimes it’s just super random! Getting to know the bird a little may also help this process. Maybe they will remind you of something, which can inspire the perfect name for them!

#2 Physical Traits

Sometimes something will stand out about a bird’s physicality. My first chicken I named was “Beardie”, because well, you get it. I named her son “Eyeball” because he had black down around his eyes, causing them to look huge. I wasn’t an incredibly creative child, so feel free to get more creative with yours! Color, shape, size, and breed can all be good starting points for naming by physical traits.

#3 Themes

This one is really fun if you have multiple birds. Your favorite show or movie, foods, and literature can all be ways to get creative with themes. I have also seen people use Biblical names, mythical names (gods, goddesses, etc.), candy, space, and plants as theme ideas. I have had a group of chickens named after characters from “I Love Lucy” as well as a group with old lady names. I also helped one of my friends come up with cake-themed names for her chickens. My button quail covey all have names that start with the letter B. If none of these themes interest you, think of what does interest you and try to find your starting point there.

Closing

I hope you were able to find some insight for naming your flock! If you find yourself not able to tell your chickens apart, named or not, I would suggest looking into leg bands. Feel free to post any suggestions in the comments! God bless, and have a great day!
