Welcome to my page! I've been wanting chickens for a couple years now, but had to convince the spouse first. He's been beaten into submission, and here were are with our first birds! Our oldest son (5.5) has been given the task of naming them. Needless to say, they have some interesting names! I am looking forward to hearing the names he comes up with for the rest of our flock!
The original plan was to purchase only started pullets, but really, who can resist cute little fluff balls? I certainly can't! We purchased 6 chicks from TSC on April 13th - 4 amberlink pullets and 2 red sexlinks. The two red sexlinks have been named Daisy and Lily, while the amberlinks are Straw, Berry, Water, and Melon. Water and Melon will be moving to my mother's house once they are coop-ready. We also have a Light Brahma gal, 5-6 months old, who will be coming home once our coop is finished. Her name is Snowball, because she is big, white, and fluffy. She is a very sweet gal, and I have a feeling she's going to be my favorite. In June, we will be getting 2 Buff Orpingtons as well as 2 EEs. One of the EEs will be named Clucksy, the other 3 have yet to be named.
There was a huge delay in getting our coop (shed), but it is FINALLY here! Now we'll be racing to get the roof rebuilt, and converting the shed into a suitable coop. Hopefully it won't take TOO long! It is 10'x10', so there will be room for plenty of chickens, since I'm already excelling at chicken math. It took a while to decide if we'd be letting them free-range or not, but since the neighbor's dog is a known chicken killer, they'll be getting a fenced run instead.
The original brooder:
Our current brooder, 4'x3'x28". Chicks are now 3 weeks old.
And the shed that will become the coop! (Picture is from the ad, right now the roof is missing! Had to remove it to haul the shed to our house)
The chicks their first night home, 4/13/12
And now at 3 weeks old! 4/30/12 It's hard to believe how fast they change!
Snowball, the light brahma girl. She will be coming home as soon as the coop is ready. I can't wait, she is such a sweetheart! She's not laying yet, but hopefully soon!
