Raising Chickens on a Shoestring

This is a mix of a few good ideas, a lot of information that is really too sketchy to be useful and some terrible advice -
Chickens locked up separately in battery cages at night on wire footing? PLEASE NO! Readers, please don't do that!
Chickens can be raised on a shoestring but no matter how much or how little money you spend, you do need knowledge. And that's free.

The suggestion of using old rabbit cages with wire flooring is appalling. This is uncomfortable for the chickens without some sort of softer flooring. The wire is a surefire way to give those chickens bumblefoot. Much better for them would be to cover the wire flooring with the trays that usually come with the cages, and then add a substrate that can be cleaned out. The suggestion that cleaning coops or cages only once a week is just not enough. I get being on a budget, but if you can’t care for chickens properly, you shouldn’t have them.
