Reducing "flies" !

I haven't heard of using DE to prevent flies before, so that is very interesting that it could be used as that. I do worry that the chickens scratching it around would be very harmful to their lungs.
I was very excited, as I currently have an abundance of flies, but was rather disappointed at lack of details and ideas.

This is quite a debate, but DE doesn’t do much. It’s basically overpriced dirt. It certainly won’t do a thing for keep away flies! Don’t put it in feed, either. It’s kind of like putting dry cocoa powder on something-it’s easily inhaled and can cause respiratory issues.
DE is a respiratory irritant, and can cause serious harm to a chickens respiratory system, as well as humans.
Just a thought.
I was disappointed that the only ideas for reducing flies were:
1. clean coop
2. diatomaceous earth

More ideas, please, would be very helpful. There seems to be a consensus that diatomaceous earth is not good for chickens, because it gets in breathing passages - same problem for people. An interesting reference to diatomaceous earth aiding chicken health, without enough detail to track down, and no citation or link. This is a problem, too.
DE may help if it doesn't get any moisture on it. There are better choices out there, lime permethrin.

Interesting. I was hoping for more than one way to deal with flies though. I'll try it out?
