My original Guineas- pearl Rosie & Lee were raised from tiny babies. They're 5 or so.
2 years ago they had two white babies- Sid n Vicious.
The pearls were great parents- esp the Daddy, Lee. They lived peacefully, healthier than I thought was possible.Even survived the Texas Blizzard thanks to their spacious coop ( winterized) just fine. Then, after one of my senior rescue blueheeler died- I adopted another rescue for company for my remaining blueheeler. One day they got into Guinea fowl section of yard. The dogs herded them- little Sid-( the whites now going on 3 yrs)- landed in wrong yard and was killed by neighbor dog before i could rescue him. His brother- vicious- was visibly depressed now over a month.
I have never fed them a traditional diet. They refused to eat anything but the native seed mix that the pearls were raised on. They also for 2.5 yrs have loved a slaw salad mix at night when returning to coop for 2 yrs now. Last night, little Vicious ate and other than depression- was fine.
Vicious just died right in front of me. No attack by preditors- just laid down for sun as usual- but i noticed how still he was. So i checked him...No visible injury.
No discharge from mouth, eyes etc. Waddles good color.
Could he have died from depression?
I just dont know what else couldve happened.
He had no diarrhea, etc. Appetite fine. No access to poisons, etc.
The pearl parents are fine as well.
Just to ensure i dumped remaining food- they always have clean water...
I am so sorry for both Sid n Vicious. They were well loved and will be sorely missed.
Vicious was laying - and died- right where his brother Sid is buried.
People underestimate these birds intelligence and family unit love.
When they get out of yard- Rosie always understands my directions and follows me around the block- leading otjers- to return into yard thru gate.
I know that I have not fed them properly according to rules- but they have been healthy and happy for nearly 5 years now.
Bless the two little "twins".
My neighbor loved them as much as I did. She passed away also in Jan...but her family also loves them and they have both yards to wander.
The female pearl still goes to her back glass door , calling her.
I think the grief of her loss- followed by little Sid last month- was just too sad for baby Vicious.
They are extraordinary little birds.
