The Jack Russell is a breed of terrier originally bred for fox hunting.
This article is about the goods and bads about Jack Russell's based on my experiences.

If you want a dog who...

Is small, sturdy, and natural-looking
Is one of the most energetic, most determined, and most intense of all breeds
Is extremely alert and makes a keen watchdog, yet is still sociable with strangers
When handled properly, is the brightest and most trainable of all the terriers, loves learning tricks, and EXCELS in competitive activities such as agility and flyball

A Jack Russell Terrier may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...

The dynamic terrier temperament
Providing plenty of exercise and interesting things to do
Rowdiness and destructiveness when NOT given enough exercise or interesting things to do!
Very strong chasing instincts
Digging holes
Barking
Constant shedding (lots of white hairs everywhere)
Mouthiness – chewing on things, carrying things around, mouthing your hands in play
Potential aggression toward other animals

A Jack Russell Terrier may not be right for you.

You may consider adopting a dog instead of buying a puppy. Many dogs, Jack Russell Terriers included, are currently available for adoption in your local dog shelters.
These helpless but adorable dogs are waiting in dog shelters hoping that someday someone will rescue them. Dog adoption costs are lesser than the cost of a new puppy. Dog adoption costs are usually around $300 or even less.

Grooming needs!

A short haired Jack Russell does not need alot of grooming I'd say once every week.
However a longer haired Jack Russell once every 3 days.
There are 3 different Jack Russell coat types Long Short & Broken
Training.

From my personal experience I would say Jack Russell's are easy to train (Tricks) however they are a very active dog and will easily get distracted from you.
I would recommend just training for about ten minutes every day to begin with because if they get bored they will lose interest in learning.

They are not great with other animals as they have a very high prey drive and will chase an animal if it runs away.
In my experience they are fine with chickens if they grow up with them but I would not leave a young puppy unattended with your chooks.

Friendly?

I have had my Jack Russell Lettie since she was born and she is now 2 years old, Lettie is a very good companion to me and sticks by my side at all times, I should mention she also lives with her older sister and mother.
She is a very friendly dog and is always trying to make new friends!
She is my best friend and I highly recommend a Jack Russell if you are looking for a companion!
