Trouble in Parasites: Natural Wormers

Very well-written article, explaining some of the natural worming treatments. I’m quite impressed with the amount of work the author put in, especially the research. Altogether a great job.
Excellent overview. I actually recognize the source of the DE quote, coming from the foremost equine parisitologist in the world.Dr Nelson.
I appreciate the careful job you have done looking up scientific studies on all these various "natural" worming resources. Excellent and very helpful.
Great article. Im a natural mama that prefers natures medicine..Buut Natural doesnt always mean safe is true! Theres def. Lots of Buzz around DE ! It seems chicken peeps are very divided on this issue. You provided clean and concise info. Thanks
Kinda felt like this was biased. Well written but, almost like a debunking natural worming remedies. If it’s not a lot of research on if these truly work, how do we know if they truly harm? Or maybe at what volume of consumption is a harmful amount. We know apples have cyanide in their seeds but I’ve swallowed a fair share and never got sick. I’t would have been good to see some more talk about how harmful it could be to give these things to the flock with research. I agree completely with DE being harmful, there have been plenty of studies. Not trying to knock you it was a good read and some good information. 👍

Hi there,
ANY information I could find was listed in the sources, pro or con, should you actually go through them, also the danger threshholds and side effects. I didn't set out to specifically debunk, just to provide actual evidence to either support or disprove commonly shared internet theory. My family was (and still is) very holistic/natural remedy when I was growing up, we had naturopathy doctors and they would always say that nothing they could prescribe is intrinsically harmless unless it was intrinsically useless. If anyhing, that's my bias- natural/holistic doesn’t mean safe.
I don't want people accidentally harming/killing their birds with something they read in an instagram post.
And as most if not all research proves they don't work well, if at all, they more or less de bunked themselves. 🤷‍♀️ I can't help that.
It's easy to find the research on all the possible side effects, even if its not studies on chickens, it's fact that too much of any substance listed can cause the listed issues.
So why use a substance that's proven to barely work and can likely to cause issues?
Since you mentioned it, you'd have to eat approximately 200-2000 seeds (depending on the variety of apple) to cause issues to yourself, at one time. Which is ridiculous to do since they're bitter and nasty and your body would likely reject it.(via losing your cookies). Thanks for your feedback!
Great article, well-organized and researched!
Great article! It was very informative, and obviously well researched.
This article is EXTREMELY well-researched. I've always taken knowledgeable BYC members at their word that DE and other natural dewormers are ineffective, and so I've never used them. But your article backs those claims with thorough research. Very impressive. And I love the punny article title too!
Thanks for compiling this informative resource! I’ve learned a lot here (a few myths busted ;)) and there is a wealth of additional reading cited.
Excellent. Well written and informative.
Thanks for doing this - it is very helpful to have this all clearly stated and backed up with real sources.
Best on topic I've read. Love the references. Nice pictures and well presented.
