this may be a very silly question

but does anyone where actually de-worm their chickens? i know all about the mites and lice and stuff, but we're talking internal worms here. never seen any or had an issue, nor do i suspect anything, but i worm my horses every 6 weeks and i saw a poultry wormer in the same section at tractor supply the other day. i only glanced for a second as i was actually looking for the lice/mites powder

....nothing serious ..... but anyways i was thinking of going back to check it out more closely and if i can do my whole flock, cheap, why not? seriously if there is a reason "why not" please tell me lol....no sense in wasting money i dont have (hey--theres "why not")

Ivermectin here is pretty spendy but worth it for the health of my chickens. Valbazen is a broad spectrum wormer and also $40 to $50 a bottle which reminds me i have to order some lol

I bought the BIG bottles and it lasts me FOREVER. 500+ birds so it is worth the money for me. I can't fool around with Wazine etc. The 1% injectable is what I buy in the Iver. I mix it 1 to 1 with Lixotinic and put it down the throat for individual doses. I put 6 CC per gallon for mass worming.

But IVER does not kill tape worms.

I use the Valbazine 1 cc to 8 cc water and dose each and every bird.

Never have wormed my poultry. Never had a problem because I didn't. 300 + chickens. Geography plays a roll in the likelihood of having a serious problem with worms.

Many products used for treating poultry have a withdrawl time for consuming the meat or eggs also.

There are also many on this board that use natural measures for worming.

So in the end you will likely get a number of opinions and options.

I moved this post to managing your flock where it will get better exposure as the question you asked is not about an emergency situation or active disease issue it is better suited for this forum section.

Yes, I also put DE in ALL the feed and a pile in coops so they can dust bathe. Thats why I don't worm as much as the vet said. If I followed what he says I'd be worming birds almost every other month.

Maybe that's why I am his only chicken client.

They were in utter amazement that I bring chickens to the vet and he says he really respects people with chickens for pets.

They can be much more than dinner.

I do us the Wazine. Use it first and do it twice in about a 2 week period. Then I check the poop of the chickens and wathc for lethargic chickens. I do have some injectable ivermectin and will use this if the guy warrant it. It put a drop in each chickens mouth. You are suppos to use 1cc per 100 pounds. So i am guessing a drop will do me. I band all the ones I have use ivermectin one, so it is a process.

You can loose your entire flock to worms. Check their poop and check it often. For a chicken, this is preventative medicine you can afford.

I am getting about 10 eggs a day. If I worm, don't I have to throw away eggs for weeks?
