What's wrong with soy?

I've heard some people say they don't like soy in their poultry feeds. Just out of curiosity I'd like to know why. The feed I am going to start feeding them once the chicks are a few more weeks older is BlueSeal OrganicLife which lists Plant Protein Products as the protein source.

I'm just wondering what everyones opinion on it is.

Many people are trying to avoid soy due to most of it now being genetically modified. Someone may offer other reasons, but that's the one I hear most often.

An organic feed will not have GM soy (or other GM ingredients, like GM corn). Part of the organic standard is 'no GMOs (genetically modified organisms)'.

I also like to see an omnivore, like chickens, get animal protein. Animal protein is different from vegetable protein. There are amino acids and other nutrients involved that are not in vegetable protein. An ominivore's body needs animal protein by design. That's is not to say an omnivore cannot survive on vegetable only protein - but it's not the same.

My doctor said to avoid soy because it rises your estrogen level and can cause painful periods and tender breast. I wanted to feed my chicks soy free feed so i would have eggs and meat that were soy free.

I think this is a good question. Specifically, what I'd like to know is, assuming that soy is indeed harmful for humans, how much of whatever is harmful is indeed passed on to humans via the chickens' eggs? That is, are those allegedly harmful substances (? proteins) not broken down by the chickens' digestive tracts and included in their eggs? (Don't get me wrong. I love my chickens, but I could live with them dying at age 14 years old rather than age 15 y/o, but not me and my family!)

I agree with the animal protein, but there aren't any feeds available by me that don't contain Pork Meal or Bone Meal. I'd rather feed them a feed with animal protein coming from Fish or Crab meal. Either way when I feed them an organic vegetarian food soon I will be supplementing them with treats such as worms, fish fillet, shrimp, scraps, etc...

GM (genetically modified) soy & corn are taking over the world. Crazy stuff. It's linked to everything you eat and buy in the store/world. Buy heirloom plants for your garden if you can!!

I believe this is correct. Most soybean that is grown is altered so that the farmer can spray his fields to kill the weeds in the soybean fields. It is called Round-Up Ready. The Round-Up will kill the weeds but not the soy plants. They are doing this with corn and I think cotton too.

Soy contains phyto-estrogen, which as you might guess from the name, acts like the estrogen that the body produces naturally.

I don't know enough about chicken biology to speculate on what it does to chickens, but there is a good amount of science out there that suggests eating a lot of soy is bad for humans, especially male humans.

The problem isn't the soy you know about-a little bit of tofu is fine. The real problem is all the soy that is in processed foods that we eat without knowing about it.
