One of my 8 week old chickens is acting sick. She is a RIR. She has been acting sick for a couple days, she stands kind of puffed up with her neck drawn into her body. I checked her over looking around her vent and under wings. I didn't see any signs of any "bugs". The other 13 chicks and 3 hens all seem fine. Could it be worms? If so what is the best way to treat and should I treat all ? Is there a wormer that will allow me to continue to use the eggs ?

I personally would use wazine as it gets round worms and that would be what would help

So sorry to hear that this girl isn't doing well.

1. Separate her from the others. Put her in a warm place, possibly in your house or in a garage. Keep her warm & dark, which will keep her calm.

2. Investigate a fresh dropping. After she's separated it'll be easier to do. Grab some gloves or a stick and break apart the fresh fecal matter. Do you see any evidence of worms: white segments or eggs, or even a live worm? The poop MUST be fresh to find this.

Overall, what is the quality of her poop? Runny? Bloody? Foamy? Firm? Very green? Etc.

3. Offer her yogurt mixed with her feed. The yogurt is good for her intestines, as it introduces good bacteria.

4. Has she lost weight? Is her weight similar to the others' weights?

Whether you can still eat the eggs depends upon the wormer you use. The other option - if you're sure she was worms - is to isolate her & just worm her. Worm the other chickens when the molt.

I'm sending many hugs & good wishes to you & your young chickens. I recently lost a hen and we were heart-broken by her death.

Good luck with your chicken, JennsPeeps has some great advice there....I just wanted to say I read your sig line and think you're great!! What a wonderful story. Make sure she has plenty of food and water when you isolate her. i have had good luck with the plain yogurt mixed with feed. If it was respiratory she would usually have some kind of resp issue (sneezing, watery eyes, gasping, wheezing, etc). The sticky is pretty helpful.~ Kim

p.s. Are you addicted to your chickens yet? At least to BYC? I have found (in the last year of having chickens) there are certain things (like yogurt) I keep on hand just in case. I keep saline solution, lubricant (in case i need to check a vent for egg), and an antibiotic package (just in case i ever needed to treat my flock and couldn't get to the store in time)

Yes ya might say I am addicted! I go out first thing in the am and let the chickens out and check on the little chicks. I am in the barn several times a day checking on them all and spending time like digging earth worms for them etc. Then 1/2 to 1 hour after dark I go out make sure everybody has roosted and found thier spot for the night and close the door to the out side run. Yes I guess ya could say I tuck my chickens in at night and wake em up in the morning. However I don't get to gather eggs. That's the wifes to do and she gets so eggcited when she brings em in with her special little egg basket.

She could be egg bound / have a soft egg in her. I've had this recently with a couple of my girls, it makes them quite poorly - all puffed up & miserable, wouldn't eat.

As to wormers, I use flubenvet by jannsen - there is no egg withdrawal. Its a white powder you add to the food or on a peice of bread & butter per hen.

i had a wyanndotte hen to do that when i first got her. I checked on here and people told me to check for worms. I found some in her poop but by then it was too late and she died on me. I wormed the whole flock just to be sure. i will say their egg production picked up after i did.
