I noticed the base of my broody hens tail looked like dirt or dried blood so when I looked at it I noticed a white piece of skin sticking up almost looked like a tick. So I went and got my Tick nippers ......ughhh...

(mad at myself) and tried to pull it off.

She screamed and realizing it doesn't come off like a tick I came in to do some research. I found that chickens have an oil gland and I am wondering if this is what it is.

In another post it was described as "You will find a pink nub that looks like a little nipple. That's the oil gland". Now they say "pink" but this is white. Can the oil gland be white? Should I leave it alone?

Also, I wondered if it was an infected or ingrown feather since she was pecked and lost all her feathers on her lower back near the tail. I wish I had some pictures but I don't want to upset her anymore and she is sleeping with her babies.

Thanks!

I am very worried I may have hurt her if I did almost pull the oil gland off. Anyone????

OK I just did more searches and I believe it is the oil gland. Could I have done harm tugging at it? All the reading I have done on this forum and books and I can't believe I never came across this topic. I never heard of this oil gland.

Oh well, I guess I will just check it in the morning and hopefully I didn't hurt her.

I'm so sorry this happened to the both of ya'll. I wish I could help but I can't .Sorry! I will be researching this one too. I would like to know more about it.

You would have only done damage if the oil gland or uropygial gland was harmed (bleeding) or was hanging off. Birds can live without their oil gland, however it is best to bring them inside during rain or winter to keep them from becoming water logged and possibly chill.

Not trying to hijack the thread but...

I saw this on my roo when I dusted him the first time. His sticks up a bit higher than the pic and is pinker. Also, there was "dirt" type stuff around it. At first I thought it was a different kind of mites, but they did not move, but I dusted it a bit extra anyhow. I did not know it was an "oil gland" 'till I read this thread. How very interesting- thanks for the info!
