I couldn't figure out what section to post this in. But there have been a few posts about poison ivy lately, and i wanted to post this recipe i found at http://poisonivy.aesir.com/view/control.html.

1 cup salt
8 drops liquid detergent
1 gallon vinegar

Combine salt and vinegar in pan. Heat up to dissolve salt.
Add detergent.

Apply with spray bottle.

According to the writer, this will kill all plants, so be careful not to kill your other plants. It seems to me that this can't possibly hurt our dearly beloved chickens when they free range, but maybe it will help us get the nasty poison ivy away from ourselves.

If this is the wrong place to post this, moderators, please let me know what i should've done with it.

Also, i haven't tried this yet; i have to buy vinegar. So if someone has tried this, i hope you will post so we can have confirmation that it works.

Oh my gosh, I'm so going to have to try this. I have bad poison ivy around here, my goats and chickens and horses get into it and then I get it - no matter how careful I am to avoid it! /sigh

Incidentally, I think the salt would probably just wash off maybe on its own? Sometimes epsom salt, alone, is even used as fertilizer. (Weird, eh? It is recommended as fertilizer on the package.) So maybe the detergent keeps it on and the vinegar does something chemically magical.

I hope so, because I'm going poison ivy hunting! The ground where it is is pretty much worthless anyway.

the detergent acts as a surficant breaking down the oils in the leaf to allow the chemical to work.
if you can get your hands on agricultural vinegar
it's a little more potent. this formula works on many types of weed but may take several applications on some stubborn species.

WOW! So glad I found this post. I have two acres that is covered with the stuff. I get it nearly every time i am out in my yard, which is where I love to be. I am getting over it again now in fact. Having had it so often I have finally found what works to clear it up within a week. I take an antihistamine daily or however often the bottle says I can. That keeps me from itching and thus scratching and spreading it. Most importantly the first line of defense after I come in from the yard is to wash off with some locally made goatmilk lye soap. This was recommended to me around the 3rd time in less than a year that I got poison ivy... The lye dries up the ivy oil that is the irritant. In the shower or bath is the only time i scratch actually scrub the fire out of the rash. Using the goatmilk lye soap, a scrubby of some sort and hot water i scrub open what will and then rinse thoroughly. When I get out of the tub I dry off the rash places LAST. I take no chances. I get it too easily and often. With that said, I know this remedy works well and like I said I can have it dried up within a week. Hope this helps someone.

A very old natural remedy I use is to pour boiling water at the roots from a tea kettle. I got rid of all the poison ivy around my house that way and it has never come back.........
