I have a pair of ravens that are picking off my chickens!!!!! My chickens are free range they have access to my entire 6 acres, they spend most of their time in the horse/cow pasture. I do keep tm locked in at night, we have racoons EVERYWHERE!!! so I am very carefull about keeping them locked up at night. But the ravens are killing them in the day time!!!!

Last year I lost 6 hens and a rooster, to them! We ended up "getting" 4 of the ravens chicks last year but the parents are smart!

Now that the ravens are nesting again they are at it again! I have lost 4 hens so far this spring!!! Last sunday, I went to go and grab my horse to head out for a ride, I startled the ravens they took off and I ran over and there was one of my tamest hens, ripped wide open and and trying to run away

It absolutly broke my heart!!! I had to put my hen out of misery!!!

What can I do to get rid of these smart birds???? I do not want to have my chickend "locked" up. I love watching them out scraching up the pasture!

I was hoping that there would be a way to snare them? Or something like that? I do want them dead! But unless I sit in the barn all day long just waiting for them to come in and make there move, I am not going to get a shot in at them. I am guessing that they are way to smart for a trap? I was going to sit my cat live trap out in the field with a chuck of meat in it to try and get them in? But every time I set that trap I just catch MY cat! darn thing loves the trap, lol. I have even sprayed her with the hose in the trap??

Ravens are not protected if indeed it is killing your chickens use a full choke 12ga to reach out and stop it. Ravens will take chicks but I had not heard of them killing full grown chickens.

if i was you and had any gun i would put a pile of food (meat/fish) out where you can see them. after they figure out theirs food theyr they will land and thats when you shoot away.

They are very smart bird meaning if you shoot at them a couple of time or even get one i would think chances of them being back would be slim.

Are you sure ravens are your problem? We have a pair that eat with our chickens. When they get too close for comfort, even the hens run them off. Never had any problem, even with three week old chicks free ranging. The ravens even manage to run off the hawks that circle the yard. I've seen the ravens carry off dead dove and woodpecker, but they leave my chickens alone. Maybe a hawk is doing the kill and the ravens are getting an easy meal from them? Our ravens don't have much of a beak for tearing up a chicken. Even when we feed them leftover chicken skin (cooked) they have trouble tearing it up to eat. They're a welcome hawk deterrence around here.

Maybe the "ravens" are being mistaken for some other bird, like a black hawk? just a thought.

Hope you end all this so your chickens can forage in peace!
