I have two baby Bantees. The Mother will not allow the babies
to eat Dumur Starter/Grower. She ate some and then pecked
them bloody when they tried to eat it. I was beside myself,
trying to figure out what to feed them. I opted for oatmeal and
cooked egg, which she allowed them to eat. They are now several
weeks old and are living on Millet, cooked hamburger, chopped veggies, chopped hulled sunflower seeds, egg shell and sometimes yogurt.

To this day, they have not eaten one speck of Starter/Grower.
The Mother hen was raised on Starter/Grower until she was a couple
of months old.

This has me believing that there is something wrong with the product.
As an example, she (the Mother) will not eat sunflower seeds that are not organic. I buy them now at the health food store. I was told by the Mgr. there that many people with birds stated that their birds stopped eating the sunflower seeds from the regular grocery when chemicals were added to them.

I am returning the opened but almost full bag of Dumur Starter/Grower. I put some out on the ground for the wild birds and they won't eat it either! They eat most anything, too!
I am wondering if there was a recall or if there should be a recall???

I hope there wasn't a recall. My babies are eating Dumor starter/grower 20% and nobody has fallen ill or died. And my older pullets are on the 15% grower/finisher and they all want to eat the 20%!

Maybe it's that bag? Or maybe you have a very finicky mama.

The only recall I've heard of was Country Acres feed from Purina back in April.

You might want to read the thread i have going in the feeding section on TSC and dunmor feeds. There are a few thread about there feed so do a search also. Seems like alot of people do not like it and your hen is just telling you it is not good enough for her babies.

After I posted here, I saw cybercat's thread which is making me reconsider using it. I know my flock likes it, but they don't know anything else. And I'm a total novice so I have nothing to compare their poo to.

I will not feed Dumor; most folks do not know this, but it's actually Purina's cast-off feed (leftovers from regular feed). I had a really odd feathering issue when using it:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=39929

I experimented on a few more hatches...feeding the next hatch a different product, then the hatch after, back to the Dumor...guess what? EVERY time I fed Dumor, I had the same feather issue. Weird, but it was enough to tell me it's just simply a low-quality product....or something.

OK Wynette I was just wondering about feathers showing up in the brooder. It was after the change and they are just turning 5 weeks. They are getting them in and now loosing some. Eek it could be the feed thats real bad. Now I am thinking I might be better off tossing it and getting back to my other ASAP. I will wait and see hubby would not be happy if I had to do that.

Thanks so much for your replies. I am convinced that the feed is not good for them. They are doing very well without it. They are living in my brick patio area, eating all the little plants that come up between the bricks, all the ants, in ground bugs (I didn't realize there were so many).
I am completely organic, so I don't have to worry if they eat them.

At night, when they come in to roost they get cooked egg, yogurt, chopped fresh spinach, chopped fresh corn, oatmeal, millet and cooked hamburger, chopped grapes.

It is such a privilege to see them grow up: learn how to clean their beaks, catch a bug, balance on a twig, lie in the sun and preen, hide
under the Mother, make little flying hops with spread wings, climb up a little hill, dig in the dirt, bathe in the sand, stay separate from the Mother for a little while and then run back, eat something she didn't give them (she pecks them bloddy when they do this!) hide under a bush when she calls danger, hop up or down a step ... and on and on. It is all new to them.
It is all new to me. I am in absolute wonder.
It is a sacred experience. I welcome it.

Thanks again.

I bought some Dumor one time when I ran out of my regular feed. My birds pecked at it a little but didn't really eat it. I had been feeding them Nutrena and they still eat the Nutrena just fine.
