for a juvenile coop??? I'm thinking of buying one of these http://www.petco.com/product/12985/...Shopping_DogSupplies_CarriersCratesandKennels then going over the top and sides with chicken wire, getting an extremely large tarp, rolling it over the roof then cutting the sides of the tarp so each tarp wall can roll up separately so I only have to protect certain sides by tying the side/s down if its windy or rainy. Oh and cover all four sides during winter for extra warmth (with open spaces for air of course). I'm thinking if this works, Ill line half of my 3/4 of an acre my birds are on with these pens for isolation, specific breedings and different ages. And OF COURSE ill add nesting boxes and perches and feeders and waters. The whole sha bang. Please tell me its a excellent idea

Hmm it works for me. Ok the long way is to go to Petco.com, click dog supplies, Carriers, Crates, and Kennels, then go to page 2 and scroll down to the 6th pic on the left, then click the pic. Oh the pic has a dog and a lot of green.

dog kennels are about the easiest type of chicken coop Ive ever had.
Me and a friend both use these as our coops for all kinds of chickens.
Me: red stars and one EE
him: layers, cochins(bantams and large) silkies, geese, OEG bantams, and Pheasants.
Both of us love this type.

Hi. Right now we are using a dog kennel and we have all sides tarped. On top we put some green plastic garden type fencing and a tarp over that. During the warmer months we remove the top tarp and a side or two for extra ventilation. For the winter months we put two heat lamps in to keep them warm. We have a dog igloo in the 'coop' and the hens lay there. It's kind of funny to watch. We built nesting boxes but they never used them. We put the dogloo in for the peacocks and the hens all line up and wait their turn to lay an egg. During the day (weather permitting) we free range our chickens and peafowl pair. We just bought some cochins and we are turning a rabbit hutch into a coop for them and then using a smaller dog kennel for their run.

Anyway this has served it's purpose very well for us. We move it around periodically just so they have a fresh patch of grass. We also put some straw and pine shavings in for extra warmth and bedding when needed.
Good luck!

. Good thing is I already have a giant roll of chicken wire to use so hopefully it will be enough and the entire project done in a month or less. People keep posting. ALL ideas welcome and just keep watching this thread for an update.

Have you tried craigslist yet? I have bought three off there and havent paid over $60 for one. I have bought a 12x10, a 10x7 1/2 and then this last one is a 13x10. A heck of a lot cheaper than the $250 I see everywhere. They work great, I love mine!
