Hen vomiting now, help please?

Ok, I was checking on, loving up on :), my hens a second ago. My daughter wanted to hold one so I gave her a hen and then I noticed that her crop is swollen and squishy?!?!?!?!?!? I smelled her breath, nothing funny. I thought maybe it was some reaction to some kind of scrap I had given them. I checked the other girls, most of them not all of them, and their crops are small and hard and full of pullets. Should I be worried? Is something wrong with her???? I have had a drop in eggs recently, I don't knwo if these things are connected. Also, she isn't underweight, but she does weigh less than the other girls. Just so that I am clear, her crop is very squishy like a water balloon and it is pretty swollen. Any advice would be great.

I would separate her (including not letting her range) until you are sure the crop is ok....
 
DLHunicorn-I will go seperate her and post what I observe. But...I was also reading your poo-ology site about my two frizzles that have been having terrible crop issues (will it never end?!?!?!?!?). They now have orangish poo. I keep getting scared that it's blood but it's not. After reading your page I am thinking that the whole malabsorption stuff or enteritis would make sense b/c they were half starved when they were given to me. That also explains why they are having crop issues. So I ordered some kind of something from murray so that I can give it to all of my birds to make sure that they don't get anything and to also cure the frizzles. Sorry to change subjects but do you think that sounds right on or do you think I ma over reacting? I hope that I am not over reacating b/c it cost me 28.00 and it is REALLY hard for me to come off that $$.

What are the age of these birds with the problems?
Capillaria (worms) will also cause intestinal damage which will often show orangish/pinkish sloughed off bits from the intestines... when was the last time you wormed? (if you have not wormed now might be a good time to do so)
 
We got our "original girls" at the beginning of May this year. The frizzles were aqcuired two weeks ago, I'm not sure of their age. I think that they are cockerals about to come into their own. My "og's" have never been wormed. I will buy stuff to worm them today. Would worms cause a swollen squishy crop? It's like, right when we get everything going smoothly in our coop the sky starts falling:-( I can't wait to get everything back on track again!
P.s. her crop has gone down but it is still a bit swollen and still all squish this morning. She pooed (sp) like four times throughout the night. It is all normal-dark colored with some of the white stuff on top but very watery. I don't kno wif that helps or not. In on eit looks like there is an undigested millet seed. There, probably all of the poo anyone needs to think about at 6:30 in the morning.

I, too, am thinking far too mauch about chicken poo these days. When we were PM-ing about this, did I tell you that Penelope had that squishy crop, too, after her impacted crop cleared? The vet attributed it to the strange foods I was giving her on a digestive system that was already taxed (ACV, yogurt, bread, hand-feeding formula). I'm now feeding her just soaked/mushy layer pellets, and whatever she finds when they are out in the yard for 1-2 hours a day.
Have you fed them anything "odd" (ie yogurt, bread, etc) that might have caused the gassiness in the crop?
I'd also say seperate her (do you have a dog crate or something?) so you can control what she eats and watch her poop closely (we use newspaper as its easy to see the droppings and easy to change) for a couple days at least. See if the gassiness diminishes on a controlled diet.

im new to this site.. somewhere this morning i read something on chicken poo.. ive tried to find a site where i can learn more on this subject. my chickens have had some strange looking poo and id like to know more about it.. oh
by the way..
im sure you know what that white stuff in chicken poo is good for? chapped lips. maybe be old humor but it still gets the kids attention.. luv
 
Sea-chick-first of all, I was just looking at the pics on the other post and how cool is it that your family lived on a sailboat!?!?!?!?!?!? That is soooo cool:) I am trying to post my pics but having problems..go figure:)

Anyhow, yes I had the gassiness with the sick frizzles with impacted crops. That has improved with a change back to their normal diet. This chicken however didn't have any crop issues. I just noticed yesterday that her chest was all swollen and ridiculously squishy. Her diet hasn't changed at all. So now I am really worried about her:-(

How is Penelope???
 
Hmmm.. do they free range? Maybe she ate something that disagreed with her? I would still bring her in and monitor her for a few days and see if it clears. If not (and if no one else has any thoughts, 'cuz I am a total newbie too!) try googling "sour crop". That is the squishy crop name. I believe most people recommend ACV and yogurt for that, but check to be sure. And I wouldn't give those right away, after my experience with Penny, because in her case that made things worse. But if it doesn't go away in a few days on a closely-monitored diet, maybe try it?

Penelope is doing better, thanks for asking. Still very thin. I bring her in at night and give her the mushy pellets to be sure she's eating something good for her. I also ordered some Avia Charge 2000 so will give that when it arrives.
