Here are the 100 roos we bought back in May. They are going to the butcher on August 16th. I will kinda miss all the crowing at 5:00 every morning...
THey are such pretty boys!

Wow, they look like the same mixture of chickens I have except mine are pullets! Beautiful Birds, you'll have 100 great meals coming up soon!

We got them from Cackle. I recommend Cackle to anyone, they did so great on this order and we havent lost anyone yet! They were hatched on May 4, so um I guess that makes them 13 weeks old. We were hoping to go to 20 weeks but the butcher stops processing at the end of August, and after getting guts stuck under my nails I am NOT cleaning 100 chickens...

Was this an "all heavy breed roo" assortment? They look wonderful. What breed is Ceasar, a white rock? And Elvis is a Buff Orpington? How did they distinguish themselves among 98 others?

I had a batch of roos like this that I got from McMurray, only 25 of them, and was always glad to watch their numbers go down. One of the things I liked about raising standards for meaties is that they didn't need to be butchered all at once, they had a much wider range of ages they could go. I only did 3-5 at a time, from about 16 - 24 weeks of age, and they were all tender & tasty.

I know your processor has a closing date, but why don't you keep 10 or so to grow bigger & process them yourself? Get yourself a jumbo pack of disposable rubber gloves & give it another try?

There's a great video on YouTube titled "Chicken Processing on Custer Family Farm". It shows an easy way to skin the chickens, but even if you prefer to pluck you can use their method to clean out the insides.

Enjoy all your tasty meals, however they get to your plate!

Chicky Tocks, yes we had 6 pullets, 2 of whom my stupid dachshund had for lunch. There are 2 other suspect buffs that I will keep until I hear crowing

nicalandia, I know some of them are huge and some are teeny...I am not too thrilled about that but we cant keep going thru a bag of feed every 2 days till they are bigger...I will use the smaller ones for soups and things like that.

Sunny Side Up, Ceasar I am guessing is a White Rock indeed! And Elvis is definitely a buff orp. They are both a bit larger bodied but the thing that distinguished them from the crowd is that they have exceptionally shiny plumage and arent as people shy as the others (imagine trying to get 100 roos to be lap dogs...it didnt happen) and are more aware of the fact that if they come to me they get snacks so I bonded with them more. Theres a RIR named Lancelot that I am keeping as well, he has nicer hackle feathers with a black cape that makes him stand out, but hes hard to track down for pics.

ETA and yes it was a mixed heavies assortment.

WOW that's a lot O' roos! Neat idea to just get a bunch of heavy breed roos for meat.

Must be hard to part with some of the prettier ones, though!
