Ok.....DW, who originally didn't like the chickens has really taken to the laying flock. 1 Delaware Rooster, 1 Delaware hen and 3 BO girls. NOW for the question.....can you give your chickens too many treats, even healthy ones? DW enjoys taking a little "leftovers" to them every evening...and boy do they come running. Its not junk food, no sweets. So far this week its been a few pieces of watermelon, broccoli, green beans, some whole wheat pasta (they LOVED that), a piece of a banana, tomatoes, some leftover mixed salad. We are NOT into chickens just for the eggs...we are getting more than enough for us and to share with friends/family. They ARE still eating a good bit of layer ration and they free range daily for 2-3 hours. Just trying to be sure we are raising happy, HEALTHY chickens.

Opinions? Thoughts? Advise?

THANKS

I bring mine any leftovers each evening, and don't think twice about it. Like yours they eat plenty of their feed and free range so they are well provided for and the extra something at the end of the night is just a "night cap"!

Well, my hens get some treats like that too, and I usually get 11 eggs from 12 birds per day. I think that if you noticed a drop in production or thin shells you might become concerned, but a variety of plants gives them enzymes they can't get from processed feeds...

My girls do not get treats in the morning. This way they eat their feed or freerange. Then later in the day they get treats. They love anything you give them. My eggs are good and hard and I get 7-8 eggs daily from 8 girls.

I think your doing just fine on the treats.. I have a breeding pen of Rhode Island Reds that has 1 rooster and 4 hen in it they are on full feed and I give 1 cup scratch grain about noon and then around 6:00 pm they will get a 1lb coffee can full of left overs/treats.. Now they do not free range.. I do that to all 5 breeding pens..
