Hi there, I'm new to this site and new to hatching chickens. I have 2 2 1/2 day old Araucana bantam chicks. One is doing very well the other can't walk. I have done LOTS of internet reading and cannot decide what the problem is. Please Help!

1) What type of bird , age - 2 1/2 day old Araucana bantam

2) What is the behavior, exactly - can't walk upright on his Left leg, appears to hobble on his hock. His affect hock appears larger/squarer than his normal hock, though i don't think its swelling, no heat.

3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma - Not that i can see. Has never been able to walk since hatching.

4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation - Congenital?

5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all - Eating and drinking well. I have added baby vitamin drops to their water.

6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. - Normal Poop

7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? - Tried bandaid hobble for 24 hours incase its was splay leg with no difference, which i have now removed as really not convinced its splay leg as only one leg affected.

8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? - Not sure i'd treat him at the vets, maybe kindest thing to cull him if not curable without surgery.

10) Describe the housing/bedding in use - Housed on old towel so floor is not slippery.

I'm really stumped with this little fellow and don't know what to try and how long to give him before euthanasia is the kindest option.

I know these aren't great pics but will show you general idea!

that sounds like this little chap! I've tried to move it back without a lot of luck, will get other half involved and try the vet wrap idea. Did you wrap the leg straight? I'll be heart broken if i can't help him. These are my first chicks ever and already fallen for them! He's called Omlet BTW!

I honestly don't know if I wrapped it straight or not. It took me three tries - the first was too big, the second too tight and the third seemed okay. I was afraid to take it off and redo it. When her leg was bent I slipped the tendon back - you can actually feel it move. I used my thumb and forefinger and gently rotated it. I had one end of the vet wrap under my thumb and wrapped it in the same direction that I rotated the tendon. She got used to it pretty quickly and started walking almost normally within a day or so. I left it on for a week, checking that it wasn't wet or too tight. When I removed it, I had to use cuticle scissors because it had become somewhat hard and would not unwrap. I was doing it alone, so I loosely wrapped a section of vet wrap around her body to keep her wings still. The vet wrap is available at most hardware/feed stores or from a vet. If you can't find it, the ACE bandage that is self sticking is almost the very same thing, just cut it into small pieces. I think the piece I used was about 3/4 of an inch wide and about an inch long. Another good thing is that since your chick is so young, the chances of a full recovery are better. If you have other chicks, they may need to be seperated so that they don't peck the bandage. Here is another pic, though it was still too tight in this photo, you can see her little foot is red.

thanks for advice. After 3 bandage changes the foot doesn't seem to be swelling any more. He (?she) has already started to flex the toes and put them down on the bedding, which he hasn't been doing until now so i'm starting to feel very positive about the little guy! He little friend pecked the bandage a couple of times and has now given up so i'm going to leave them together for the moment as she SHOUTS :)lol:lol) when left on her own and i only have the 2 of them!

Good luck! Great job, mama. I have a 7 month old EE that had the same issue. She still has her toes and foot curled inward, but she gets around really well and doesn't have a pecking issue (getting pecked). She is my sweetest little girl. So glad you didn't give up on her!
