I have become obsessed with Delawares and hope to be getting some soon. I have seen pictures of the day old chicks where some of them look like they are wearing eyeliner because they have the stripes by their eyes. Is this the difference between male and female chicks in this breed or do just a few of the chicks get this regardless of sex?

I haven't heard of it being a distinction between males and females. I am not an expert in Delawares, but I couldn't tell my dels apart by gender until about 4-5 weeks old and it was by the usual comb and redness of the cockerels.

Good luck with your Dels when you get them! They are a great breed!!!

I've never noticed any eyeliner type markings in my Dels. I'll have to go back and look at chick pics. The shoulder markings are probably the earliest way to guess at sex, that is, when they come in. This picture is an example of that. Of the two chicks leaning down where you can see their backs, the one on the right is a cockerel and the one on the left is a pullet. No eyeliner.

I have seen them on other sites as well that look the same as the ones in the pics

maybe the ones in the photos are not true Del's and some type of cross breed. If the folks like Speckeledhen have never seen this marking before???????????????

I've never had a Delaware chick with those markings, either on the eyes OR on the back. They are usually solid yellow chicks. I would not even guess that that was a Del chick in that picture from all the ones I've hatched here.

Maybe that's what happens when you cross in Columbian Rock blood, but I really dont know.

We got 8 del chicks this spring and they all looked like Cyn's chicks. I haven't the foggiest clue what the "eyeliner" chick is, but it's not a purebred Del.
