my sweet little silkie hen was eaten by something today. my chickens haven't been going in until almost dark and she wasn't in the coop, so we went out looking thinking that she was just hiding from the rain and we found her headless body, probably a possum or weasel

Headless is most likely to be a coon. That is the price of free-ranging. If anyone is going to do free-ranging, then it is a matter of when and not if they suffer a loss. Am sorry for your loss. Several of my 24 chooks are becoming pets so I can imagine what you are feeling.
 
Probably a RACOON! They are noted for decapitating. So sorry. Racoons do not leave a pleasant sight.

Be aware, it will be back for another "chicken dinner". Hope you dispatch it before another meets the same fate.
 
thanks, yeah, they're staying locked in for now. i'm thinking maybe a cat? she was a very small silkie and we have stray cats around. i'm thinking about separating the rest of my silkies from the rest of the flock. the others kinda pick on them and so they don't get as much food. that way, the silkies could stay in a pen all the time and the others (not pets) could wander around so i still have nice eggs. i just am really sad
