Have any of you used the pine pellets as bedding? It's an equine bedding pellet called Equinefresh. It's VERY absorbent and cuts down on a lot of litter dust and smell (at least for equines).

I'm thinking of trying it for the new babies when they arrive.

I haven't seen those. Where do you find them? I used the corn cobb bedding last year. If you use it, let us know how it works

Tractor Supply has bags for around $5-6. I've seen other off-brands and I can't attest how they would turn out, but for indoor brooders, I'm hoping the pellets will eliminate all the litter trash and those p i t a stray shavings that cling to everything.

My main concern is how the bebbehs will do walking on pellets.

I'll be sure to post the results.

I think that would work...but I just use hay. I start with just a few inches deep and toss a fresh layer on everyday and then at the end of the week dump the whole brooder and start fresh! The hay allows the pee to drain to the bottom which is nice. They seem to enjoy pecking at the hay and snuggling in it too! Just a thought...since you must have horses around anyway. I haven't yet, but plan too next time. There have been several threads on the pine pellets vs. pine shavings and the pine pellets seem to be winning. Most people put a layer of paper towles down for the first couple of days to make walking easier and keep them from confusing the pellets for food. On a side note I also use the pellets for cat litter--easy to scoop, safe for kittens (I foster) and not as smelly or dusty as regular litter.

I wish it would work for my cats, they never adjusted to the new texture and would potty outside the box.

Da punx.

The paper towel trick is a good idea.

When I switched my adult cats I had to start out with a 1/2 & 1/2 mixture. I started using it because I had a 4 week old foster kitten with a broken leg who had trouble with regular litter and her cast..long ot story, but noticed immediately how much nicer the pellets were. I can't wait to try them for chicks this spring. I used shavings before and the amount of dust that made it's way up to DH's man room was amazing, and not in a good way.
