Are there ways to help prevent sour or impacted crop???

I think the food has to pass thru the crop before the grit in the grizzard can grind up the food for digestion. I have a silkie that had past issues with sour/impacted crop...not sure if this prevents it but now I give my chickens olive oil once a week mashed in their boiled eggs. Who knows it may have been a one time issue.

Sounds like a good idea. Do you chop up vegetable treats and/or grass clippings? I was thinking about feeding grass clippings and now, after reading several crop impaction stories, I'm rethinking that.

Yeah I'm like you after reading impacted and sour crop stories I don't even give my hens lettuce.....

I give vegetables and fruit in a wire bird suet holder (the square shaped ones, the wire is plastic coated and the openings are small enough not cause any type of beak injuries).

I do give cabbage/lettuce or any other type of leafy vegetable but only in wire suet holders...gives them something to pick at and provides entertainment for all of us!!

I think my crop issue started when I was pulling up grass clippings and throwing them on the ground of their run. (I think they were swallowing the whole blade of grass and that is what impacted the crop) So NO more grass clippings for mine. From what I understand the grass is different for them when they free range and are able to break it apart with their beak.

What does the olive oil do?

My understanding is the olive oil lubricates the crop contents which will aide in emptying. I guess for my own satisfaction, I give olive oil routinely to aide in passing contents in the crop. This is only my personal opinion...it was not recommended by a vet/professional.
