Sour or impacted crop, prevention?????

How do you get a crop uncompacted? can you manually remove some of the feed?

When my little Thor had an impacted crop, I fed him small pieces of bread soaked in olive oil. After he ate them, I gently massaged his crop until the food began to pass....haven't had any problems since.
