Yesterday evening I noticed a clump of poo stuck to the feathers around a hen's rear. I had DH catch her and hold her while I tried to remove the poo. As if the poo clump wasn't bad enough, the poor girl has lice. I really don't want to treat with anything that has a withdrawal period as we are just past the withdrawal period from a cycle of treatment for worms. Does anyone have experience with Eprinex? It appears to be pretty pricey for the small amount we'll need, does it expire within a year like human meds? Any idea where I might find it locally? TSC apparently doesn't have it, bought the wrong stuff.
Thanks!

I've used it to treat mites, and yes it is very spendy!! You could also use a poultry dust...

I got my eprinex at my local feed store, so if yours doesn't have it, I don't know where to tell you to get it.

Good luck!!

I've switched to using the horse paste called Jeffer's Ivermectin (Ivermectin Paste 1.87%) (~$5)
0.5cc for bantams, 0.8cc for sandards, and 1cc for ducks.....Given orally using a 1cc syringe.
Make sure you put the syringe down the throat towards the side, so you don't get it down the airway.
I use it mostly for a yearly worming.....but it will work on mites.

I use Food Grade DE as a preventative...and it works well also, but is messier. I use it in their next boxes and spread it liberally in their favorite dusting areas. I aslo coat their feed with it. For lice/mites, I would dust it once a week for 3weeks (as it doesn't kill the eggs.).

Its not a good idea to use horse paste wormer for chickies, since you are using such a very tiny amount for them, and the paste wormers arent blended well, like a liquid would be. Using a teeny dab, you're likely not to have any ivermectin at all in that dab. Their meant for hundreds of pounds, not 3 or 4 pounds, of animal.

It's worked well for me. I switched to it just a couple of months ago...and have helped a few people around here who had major mite/lice infestations. Worked really well. It seems to me that the paste has to be mixed well, so that even the large animals don't get too little or too much......I know several farmers who use it on their dogs.... I just like the ease and the lower cost. So long as it's keeps being effective for me, I'll continue to use it. Everyone has to make their on decisions on what they're comfortable with...I will say that Ivermectin is a god send for mite/lice infestations that are beyond being able to use other non-chemical or homeopathic treatments.

I've been giving them food grade DE in their feed for about 8 months. I also put DE in their nest boxes and in the shavings on the floor of the coop. She doesn't have mites, it's definitely lice, just around her vent but it was pretty gross. I saw the egg clumps cemented onto the feather shaft. I first noticed them scurrying out of the poo clump area. They were off-white/yellowish. Kinda straw colored. Tiny, creepy little things. I can't shower enough since I found them!
What about sprays with...darn, what are they called? The two that start with "P"?

Injectible Ivomec is the easiest to measure.
The fact that a lot of people use "horse" pastes on their other animals doesn't mean it's the best way to do it.

A 50 ML bottle of 1% Ivomec is about $40 , but will store for well over a year if kept cool and dark, and can be used on most all types of animals, and it can also be given orally or mixed with their water

If you mix the Ivomec with their water, does it kill external as well as internal worms? (Will it kill mites/leg mites?)

I just did most of the flock as a preventative, I put it under their wings, but in their water would have been way way easier than catching a dozen chickens!

As long as the amount is correct , it will kill most parasites, internal and external
