I have been searching all evening and most of the day for the link to the person who posted pics of the chicken that had bumblefoot along with the "step-by-step" pics and details of the procedure. Does anyone remember that link? If so, can you please post the link.

My link says that it is now outdated. I'll poke around and see if I can find another one.

This is the link no longer working.

I believe that it has been "speckeledhen" posted a lot of good stuff on this condition and surgically removing it.

Wow! It looks like all the surgical links are gone. I can't find a single one with the pics. They used to be easy to find.

well, i encountered the same problem. i thought that i was doing something wrong or my computer was messing up. i appreciate you taking the time to find the link. i wonder what happened to the link.

Yep, there is a "sticky" at the beginning of this section in the index for bumblefoot surgery. That link won't work either. Think all that has been removed for some reason.

Speckledhen wrote this on another thread, "Soak it, clean the surface and the xacto with alcohol, wrap a towel around her middle so she can't flap her wings and just go around the edge of the plug with the xacto, then use tweezers to carefully pull the scab and underlying attached stuff out, soak her foot again with epsom salts or watered down iodine/betadine "tea" water, dry the foot, pack with triple antibiotic ointment, gauze pad over that, wrap with Vetwrap/stretch gauze (not tight, though), going between the toes and ending up around the ankle. Or you can use strips of sweatshirt material about 3/4"wide and at the ankle, wrap with first aid tape. Keep her out of the wet, maybe in a dog kennel, for three days or so, remove and replace the bandage. Do that every three days or so till it seems well."

And here is a youtube link to bandaging the foot... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yik1PtRgaU8

And
on using the vetwrap, Speckledhen wrote, "Even when we are very careful not to stretch the vetwrap, it will begin to tighten, especially when wet. Certainly, don't stretch it tight! The first aid tape I use is the cloth tape that Curad makes, but any type will do."

A posting by "ruth" (spoken of highly by several on this subject) wrote, "

I've sewn up ripped open hens, operated on hens, and worked on bumblefoot on many, many chickens working all alone. Trick is to lay them on their side and cover their head with a towel. I can walk around the "operating room" getting things I need and they never move. It stays nice and quiet in there and they just seem to go to sleep.

As far as the bumblefoot procedure, all sounds good - remember it takes lots and lots of soaking in very warm salt water, as well as a lot of mashing, digging, and prodding sometimes to get it all out, especially the plug. I then fill the hole with regular Neosporin. I would NOT recommend triple antibiotic because a lot them contain a "..cain" ingredient and it seems that is toxic to chickens - just use the regular Neosporin. I then wrap with thin strips of vet wrap, isolate the bird for about three days, remove the vetwrap and the foot is usually healed and they go on their way. I've never had a reoccurrence of one I've removed and I don't give antibiotics. I think it's just important to get all the infection, cheesy stuff and the core out. I think lots of soaking in the warm salt water (heavily salted) between cutting and digging in the pad is what really helps the most.
