So Helga has gone broody. I have some eggs under her that are NOT fertile. I have eggs coming. Cochin and some test duck eggs. My question is if chicks take 21 days and ducks take 28 days did I just make a huge mistake with two different kinds????
Will she sit long enough to hatch everyone????

Looks like your life just got a bit more complicated.

In my opinion, the best thing you can do is put the duck eggs under her, wait 7 days, and put chicken eggs under her.

The alternative is to put all eggs under her and remove the chicks as they hatch so maybe she will stay on for the ducks.

Good luck!!!

How long can you hold fertile eggs for? Will waiting a week on the chicken eggs harm them or will they be OK?

It depends on how old they are when the extra week starts. This link gives you information on how to store eggs for incubation, whether it is incubating in an incubator or under a broody.

Texas A&M Incubation site

It is better to not keep the eggs any longer than you have to before you start them. This does not mean that keeping them a little longer before you start them means you are guaranteed a total disaster with a terrible hatch. Plenty of people hatch eggs over two weeks old and get great hatches. Failing to follow the recomendations in the Texas A&M link about humidity, temperature, and turning does not guarantee failure any more than following them exactly guarantees success. The suggestions and recommendations help improve your odds. I don't follow the recommendations exactly, like I do not store hatching eggs in the exact temperature and humidity ranges suggested. I keep them in a room that comes closest, you know, just doing the best I reasonably can.

You are in a less than ideal situation to start with. It is not that you are guaranteed a disaster, just that your odds of great success have dropped a little. Shipped eggs often do not hatch great to start to with. Some people do get great hatches with shipped eggs, but many experienced hatchers are happy with a 50% success rate with shipped eggs. If you decide to hold the chicken eggs until the duck eggs have been under the hen for a week (which is what I would do in you circumstances) your odds on getting a good hatch on the chicken eggs drop a little more. You can keep those odds from dropping further by proper storage. The odds do not drop off the chart. You are not guaranteed a total disaster. It's just that your odds are a little worse than they will be next time.

Good luck!!!

I am not sure I have to worry about it now. I do believe I have another broody. One can have ducks and one can have chicks.

YAY.

Thanks for all the info Ridgerunner

So here they are,
