Last year we got Sylvia and Lydia from a local breeder. I was told that they were a cross between two breeds, but I can't remember which, any ideas?

Lydia died over the winter, leaving a very sad and lonely Sylvia behind. She never wanted to leave our side, and would perch on the back of our chairs when we were workign in the office. We didn't mind, but Argyle the parrot was very very jealous and didn't like her around at all. So we went to the feedstore in the spring and brought home 3 chicks:

I was told that they are 2 black Langshan and 1 Sussex. Does they look like what we were told they are? Here they are growing up, the 2 Langshans are looking different- one has more white. Is she a mix then? Or a blue? (eta. whats the difference between German and Croad Langshan...?)

Well, Sylvia would have nothing to do with the chicks, so I went back to the feedstore to get a friend for her that was her age. Naturally they had only roosters. Fortunately, as long as we bring them inside the garage at night, the neighbours aren't disturbed by his crowing. I was not told anything about this guy's background; but he was living in a tiny wire cage (like the kind sold for guinea pigs which really aren't good sized for guinea pigs though) with another rooster, which I was surprised by, I thought roosters didn't get along).

Any Ideas what breed(s) Pasquale the rooster is?

When I got Pasquale, the feed store also just got in some Easter Eggers, and I couldn't resist getting one. I understand they can all look different, right? But I'd still appreciate any guesses as to what Mary the Easter Egger might look like as an adult....

I don't have a clue about the breeds...I just thoroughly enjoyed reading your train of thought as you collected your chickens!! You sound perfectly normal

That was a great post, it reminded me of the children's book "If you give a mouse a cookie" A book I can't stand because it reminds me of my life... If you give him a peanut butter sandwhich he'll want some milk to go with it...and if you give him some milk, he'll want a cookie and ....................!!! Sorry, I wish I could help you with your chickens, I have no earthly idea, although Pasquale is very handsome. Is Sylvia happy now with all her friends?

Looks like your roo might be a silkie cross? Looks like he has a small puff of feathers behind his comb. Does he have any leg/foot feathering &/or a 5th toe? I have a silkie cross roo and he is a decent sized boy - not a bantam, so if your guy is a bigger boy, his size won't automatically rule out silkie cross. My boy is also very good with my other roosters. His best friend is a barred rock roo, "Stripes".

Good luck with all your new babies!! Oh, your hen looks like she could be a gold laced Wyandotte cross

Sylvia is happy with Pasquale. She is infact brooding over a couple eggs in her nest box and he climbs in with her and they sleep with their heads over each other's shoulders. They're quite cute together.

So far though, Sylvia either ignores the young chicks or pecks at them. I hope when they get a bit older she'll see them more as companions. While the adults have free run of the garden, the babies are in a wire crate pseudo-tractor like thing, so they can't be hurt (or lost)

When Sylvia isn't around, Pasquale turns his attention to the chicks; he does his "Good food over here, come have it" thing to attract them. So far, only Tree and Joe are getting to go out side of the dog crate when I am there to supervise (they are slightly older and less flighty than the other two; and they also stick to eachother's sides).

However, when Tree and Joe answer Pat's invitation to share in the "good food", he puffs up and chases them.... Is that normal behaviour?

Yes! I forgot to mention the toes, and I had silkies in the past, stupid me for forgetting that; He does in fact have a plethora of toes. Now I wonder what else besides silky is in his background. (The polydactylism is dominant but the silky-feathers are a recessive right?)

He looks like he might have Faverolle in him too. Typical Langshans found in the US are all black with feathered legs. Need better pics of the chicks... :-D

Looked up Faverollee... interesting, I can see that possibility in his background.

What would be most helpful to focus on in a photo(s) of the chicks?
