Well, my chicks were due to hatch last Sunday. I wanted to give them a few extra days, but so far nothing has happened. I opened the bator on the 5th day of lockdown since there were none pipping, and candled the eggs. Four were no good and four were completely filled with chick except for the air cell. I misted the good eggs with water and closed it back up, but still nothing. I was really hoping for at least one chick since this was my first time to ever set eggs and in a homemade bator no less! I'm not sure if I'm

Now dont get discouraged.. My first few times I had nothing either, then all of a sudden I could darn near hatch anything (with occasional issues) Since its your first time , you need to document what you think may have happened and learn from the mistakes.. I would say that maybe your humidity got too high and they may have drowned .. jsut a guess though..
 
So sorry.....when I first started, I had hatches where a few eggs never hatched. I also let them sit for an additional week & still nothing happened. It won't make you feel better...but these things do happen. Start looking into why it happened & learn from it for your next time. Again...so sorry!

I have an analog thermometer and a digital therm / hygrometer. My temps ran between 99 and 101 throughout the whole incubation period and humidity was between 40 - 50% until lockdown when I pushed it up to 60 - 65%. This is a small bator (8 - 10 eggs max) and is a still air unit. The only thing I can think that may have been an issue is that the eggs were on a wire rack above the lightbulb (25 watt) and there was no foil / metal shield around the bulb to prevent direct heat to the eggs. When I turned the eggs, I also rotated them on the shelf so the same eggs were not always sitting above the bulb. I'm going to try adding a heat shield and will put another batch of eggs in this unit. If it is unsuccessful, I'll probably call it quits. If at least one hatches, I'll build another larger bator and will install a PC fan in it for a forced air unit.
 
Sounds like you ahve a plan.. I hope you wont quit though even if you ahve another bad one.. As i said before it takes a lil time to get the hang of it .. Also I have found that the less fussing around I do the better my success rate...

I,m sorry your first hatch was a let down. Like the others said just make some notes and try to learn from your mistakes. My first hatch went great so I thought hey, I can do this. The second I had 2 out of 24!! This last hatch was 1 out of 12.

They were Guineas (first G hatch) they were shipped eggs and we had a long power outage. The one that did make it was eaten by my dog 2 days ago

Poor BrownEggFan! I lost hope a few weeks ago when my four very loved on Red Golden
eggs did nothing. I was so good to turn them, humidity good etc. and still nada. Now
I wait till the 15th to see what becomes of my current four! I am so new to this but as I read
your post I had a thought (applicable to myself at least) - I have a regular hygrometer
in my homemade bator - how delicate of an instrument could it be at 7 bucks? I wonder if I
should add a second one to confirm/contradict the temp, and humidity? Maybe it's way off base
but how would I know?! Today I will go to the cigar shop and get another to compare the readings.
Also, my eggs are sort of splotchy. Does anyone know what that is about?
Does it mean the eggs are porous? Why would they be? So many questions, so little time!

thechickenchick ~ I share your dog frustration! I was given a 36 hour old Red Golden chick and
those first four eggs. As I said below, the eggs were unproductive but our baby
(aka Cheep Cheeperson) met the same fate at one month old by our dog. I was livid!!!!
So together we will lament! I love my dog but in addition to the hatching failures, I get discouraged
when thinking of protecting the birds when they finally get outdoors! My coop will be called
Fort Clucks - NO DOGS ALLOWED!!

He leaves the adult guineas alone and the chickens do not free range. He is such a well behaved dog 95% of the time. I felt almost worse disciplining him than I did losing "teeny". I am sorry you lost one too

Thanks for the support, everyone. Lynn - can't help as to why the eggs would be splotchy, do you provide oyster shell for your hens? I just performed 4 eggtopsys and here are a few pictures. These were eggs #1, #6, #7 and #8 in the order they were collected (2 eggs per day for 4 days). All membranes were moist and supple, so I don't think humidity was too low. Also, all embryos were in the fetal position so it does not appear they ever turned to pip.
