cant put new chicks in pen with older ones......help!!

ok tried to put my 3 or 4 week olds in with my 7 or 8 week olds and didnt work they pecked them alot had to take them out any suggestions??


also i have 3 roos and only want 1 where to get rid of them?? any ideas here either? thanks in advance

I have heard that it is easier to mingle them if you divide the coop up with some chicken wire for a few days so they can see and hear each other but cant hurt each other. Its supposed to make it easier. Also, when you take the wire down you should do it at night when everybody is sleepy. Thats also supposed to make for an easier intro.

There WILL be some pecking as the new chicks are initiated into the pecking order of the flock. Just watch that no one gets REALLY hurt, and let them 'peck' it out. After a day or so, they figure out everyone's place and usually stop. Also the older chicks should loose interest in the new chicks soon. Especially if you give the older chicks something to occupy them (let them out to range, give treats like grass clippings, sticks to play with, dry leaves, or something else unique that will keep them focused on IT and not the new chicks.)
 
I hope to mix my pullets this weekend. 3 of my redsex links are 9 months and my chicks are 8weeks and 5 weeks. The young sets get along fine together but I hope to get the others to do so too. I have them in pens close to each other but not touching and all I hear is talking. hope it all goes well.


Mabey of you mix them at night or at bed time or snack time they may be ok.
that is what I plan to try anyway.

Try this, Remove all of them thar older ones , put them in a box. Then move everything around in the pen I mean everything. Keep the older ones out for a few hours in the box feel free to hold and torture them with love during this time. It is very humbling. Put the little ones in first let them acclimate. Then add back the older ones. I never mix without doing some version of this. There maybe a little fussing about by young cockerals, but not the full blown this is my pen get out! Also do it as close to evening as possible.
 
Our chicks are no where near letting them mingle with our adult chickens. We still have them in the house since they are just over a week old. When they go outside we have two chicken coops and pens one is vacant they are next to each other so they will be able to see each other. When the time does come they will both have their own hen house and who knows maybe there will be some movement? I haven't decided when to let them free-range together they will have to be comparable size before then.
