I just got back my barn cat who had been missing for a month---longish story, see "So Relieved". Anyway, he seems pretty much o.k., other than being thinner, and a small wound on his side---which I cleaned with peroxide, applied triple antibiotic ointment and dressing to. But, I believe he is dehydrated, and was wondering if it would be o.k. to give him some electolyte/vitamin supplement I have for my goats? I know my vet would suggest Pedialyte, but this is what I have on hand now. Thanks.

You might also try giving the kitty some wet cat food mixed with milk. This will get a lot more moisture in. It's really important to make sure it's hydrated, as they can have kidney issues develop very quickly. Poor baby!

I remember when looking at my kitty with kidney issues years ago, the vet would assess dehydration by looking at gums (also for anemia from parasites, etc.). Perhaps some of the vet techs on here can help- anyone?

Try to give kitty wet foods... and i'd run to the store and get some pedialyte to mix in his water...
A trip to the vets may be a good idea too. They can give fluids sub-q to him...

Milk is not necessarily a good thing to give cats. It can cause diarrhea which could cause further dehydration. Goat's milk is okay though.

My cat willingly drank some gatorade when she was ill, so you might try that. Mostly I would just make sure there is plenty of cool, fresh, clean water available adn that the cat is not staying overheated. Stress will cause the temp to go up and dehydrate / weaken the cat even more.

Thanks evrybody for all your help.

I wouldn't give my cat milk for exactly that reason, Sharon----but I do have a couple of pygmy does I may be able to get some from for him!

I have been giving him wet food off and on today, as well as offering dry. I believe his wound---size of a quarter----was an abscess, and have been keeping it clean and antibiotic ointment on it. I gave him some antibiotic, and bathed him and brushed the burrs out of his coat, and he fell asleep on my lap----shhhh....don't tell Hubby he was inside today.

I think the kittey will be o.k., I just wish I would have been more careful to begin with, and he wouldn't be in this shape now.

I had no idea about milk and cats- my vet told me to do that with my Miss Momma about 20 years ago when she was dehydrated!

Are kitties lactose intolerant? Is this why goat's is okay?

Tell hubby if he wants a happy Honey, he'll welcome kitty for a bit!

Cow's milk is really only good for baby cows! Quote from my vet. Something to do with the milk protein?
I looked it up and yes most are lactose intolerant!
