I had one girl die on me... and HAD to get two to replace her! (it was only logical!)
That is my best example of chicken math...but there is so much more! Banties only count as half a chicken...etc.. there are a ton of threads that are hysterical
I desperately want to become a victim of chicken math, but I need to build another coop to do it. I would REALLY love some silkies, and the polish are so cute, and the kids want some EE's for blue or green eggs...
Go to the feed store for supplies, two bantam chicks find their way into your "supplies" for the trip home. (Bantams are so small, surely it takes two of them to equal one chicken, right?).
Oh, wow, I didn't know there were DARKER eggs than Welsummer - gotta get me one of those BCMs!
Hey, that's new, the feed store never carried THAT breed before!
Sale? Buy three and get one free? You betcha! Now, which one...wait, I already have five picked out... Just one more and I can get TWO free chicks!
I'm tired of getting straight run bantams and ending up with Roos... I am going to HATCH what I want! (Riiiight.... It's still straight run! Only now there are more of 'em, both cockerels and pullets.)
Our town ordinance prevents me from practicing chicken math...however, I'm thinking that raising a few chicks this spring for someone who doesn't have the time and would just like them at pullet stage might be a good idea - get my chick fix and all - and you can't really count a handful of chicks, right? Since they'll be inside and no one else could hear them then you don't have to count them at all.
My chicken math?
"Mom i just want a chicken or two for eggs"
(a year later)
"Mom this guy offered to give my sister a pair of chickens, can we get them please?
(now we have 4)
"Mom, silkies are supposed to be really sweet can i get some?"
(6 birds)
"Mom my silkie went broody but nothing hatched. We have to get her a baby so shes happy!"
(We got three leghorns, so 9 birds)
"Mom my phoenix rooster died, we have to get another one! And this laying hen thats for sale, its so pretty and the phoenix isnt laying anymore!"
(11 birds now)
"Mom, I sold those phoenixes and two leghorns, can i get some more silkies?"
(11 birds again)
"Of course, Raven, I will take your unwanted rooster! What are friends for?"
(12 birds)
"Mom i need some god showmanship birds for me and my brother!"
(14 birds)
"Mom my best friend has an incubator she wants to give me so i can hath her some silkies, so i bought 34 eggs ok?
(at this moment 7 eggs have hatched so we have 21 birds)
This is what happens when you want a pair of birds for eggs. My mom rocks!
