I got a new rooster today in the mail...not going to name any names or even the breed but he was smelly when he arrived. After a quick once-over I figured out that his hock is leaking pus out (whitish color) and he appears to have bumble-foot on the bottoms of each foot? One is worse than the other.

He is in quarantine and I can't do too much until tomorrow. It's 10 degrees outside, icy and I'm home alone....not to mention I'm pregnant and ultra-queasy right now.

So what can I do for him besides clean out the wounds?

He's eating like a champ and drank a lot of water with vitamins & electrolytes.

I have several types of antibiotics but not sure which to use for an infection?

I will clean out the wounds tomorrow and access the damage better in the daylight....

Any ideas?

RareFeathers, I think PenGProcaine is the best thing to use for skin infections.
Just give him a shot and hopefully he'll clear up.
Shame on whoever sent him to you like that, that's sad.

Hi, Please tell me what bumblefoot is. I am not familiar with the condition, but with your discussion of antibiotics it sounds like a bacterial infection of the feet.
Thanks,
Andy in Fredericksburg

I'm not a fortuneteller, but I'm going to predict here that that rooster will die. He will not breed hens and you will be out your money. I would contact the seller, ask for a FULL refund of ALL expenses, and if they refuse, post pics, price and seller's name here on BYC. If they don't know better, it's time for them to learn about ethical selling. Tag you're it, the teacher. Sorry someone tried to offload a dying bird on you for big bucks.

I agree sompleaty with onthespot....the fact that someone would even send a roo in such bad shape is just beyond me....I would soak his feet if you can...might help relive his pain a bit..Im sure bumblefoot experty will be chiming in anytime..

I agree with Patty as well, no one needs to be allowed to get away with something so inhumane and irresponsible as a seller!

Lets try and fix the bird first then bash the seller! If cutting into your birds foot is going to make you queasy. You might want to try TRICIDE-NEO FOR FISH. What you do is soak his feet in it. It is time consuming but it will give you two some bonding time.

The seller should have never sent a bird in that condition unless it was specified in the agreement between said seller and the OP.

Once the infection has travelled up the shank and burst out elsewhere, it's too late. Might as well buy the plot at Forest Lawn, he's circling the drain. This isn't bumblefoot any more, its necrotic legs.
