Oh my gosh! I am so sick with guilt today. I have a 2 hens living in a coop. Then 1 wyandotte who brooded 2 babies. The babies are 6 weeks old now. The whole flock free ranges together during the day but get locked up separately. Yesterday our property flooded from the rain and the makeshift coop that mom and 2 babies were in also flooded. I wanted to fully integrate them anyway. When it was time to put everyone away, I put them all together. The 2 hens got their spot on the roost. Momma hen had her 2 babies under her wings on the roost next to them. Everything looked GREAT! When I went to bed, everyone was happily roosting away.

I get up this morning to take fresh food and water to everyone. One baby (a bantam) was outside the coop and run (he is tiny). The other was alone in a corner and wouldn't come out. I went and got her out and the photos show what I found. Her injury is from the back of her head, all down her neck and part of her back. You can see the tendons on the back of her neck.

My questions.
-Can she survive this?
-Do I need to keep her separate from her mom now?
-Mom and the other baby are out ranging right now like there is no problem. I put the injured bird back in the makeshift coop now that the waters have receded. She is drinking water and eating a little (when I let the momma in there she drank and ate with the two babies and didn't attack her).
- I cleaned her wound with bactine and can put some neosporin on it. I'm just wondering if I should put her down.

I feel horrible and responsible for not integrating them properly. But things flooded here and I wanted them dry. I'll get over my own issues to deal with the bird. Now what do I do?????

Also is it safe for the mom and other baby to be there in with her? they are circling the makeshift coop obviously to find the baby.

It's amazing how they can recover, clean the wound with warm saline water or just plain soap and water making sure to rinse well then dry the area, do you have any kind of antibiotic salve> it can't have anything with pain relief that ends in caine. after the chick is dry apply some of this salve. after a couple days, just let it continue to air heal or get some blue-kote and apply this to the area especially if mom and sibling are messing with it.. We all make mistakes and at least this one didn't end in death. let us know how the little on does and don't beat yourself up about this.

Thank you so much for answering.

What is an antibiotic salve? I have neosporin. Would that work?

Also I think the bactine (for cleaning the wound) might have had some "caine" in it. I won't use it again. Is that bad for chickens?

I can get the blue kote later on today.

Do you think it is safe for mom and baby to get locked in there with her or should I just keep them all separate until I get the blue kote?

We had a similar thing happen with an adult hen once. We just separated her until she was healed and kept applying fresh neosporin. Once she was healed we put her back with the flock and she hasn't been bothered since.

Good luck!

Are you sure it will heal? They pecked her through the skin to her tendons and skull. I mean you can see those things.

She's not doing very well now. I have her separated. She's just sitting there and shaking. I have her in a box next to the new chicks with the warming light keeping her a little warm.

How old is this chick? and she could be shockey too. I would be if that had happened to me. If you can get some blue-kote you might be able to put the chick back with mom and sib.. you'd have to watch and see how it went.. you might try giving it a little sugar water also. or when you pick up the blue-kote get some electrolytes for chickens very inexpensive. Don't try putting back with mom today but make sure it stays warm and hydrated. p.s. there has been many a chicken on here that has been scalped and injured very seriously and has recovered so she diff. has a good chance.
