Oh my gosh! I am so sick with guilt today. I have a 2 hens living in a coop. Then 1 wyandotte who brooded 2 babies. The babies are 6 weeks old now. The whole flock free ranges together during the day but get locked up separately. Yesterday our property flooded from the rain and the makeshift coop that mom and 2 babies were in also flooded. I wanted to fully integrate them anyway. When it was time to put everyone away, I put them all together. The 2 hens got their spot on the roost. Momma hen had her 2 babies under her wings on the roost next to them. Everything looked GREAT! When I went to bed, everyone was happily roosting away.
I get up this morning to take fresh food and water to everyone. One baby (a bantam) was outside the coop and run (he is tiny). The other was alone in a corner and wouldn't come out. I went and got her out and the photos show what I found. Her injury is from the back of her head, all down her neck and part of her back. You can see the tendons on the back of her neck.
My questions.
-Can she survive this?
-Do I need to keep her separate from her mom now?
-Mom and the other baby are out ranging right now like there is no problem. I put the injured bird back in the makeshift coop now that the waters have receded. She is drinking water and eating a little (when I let the momma in there she drank and ate with the two babies and didn't attack her).
- I cleaned her wound with bactine and can put some neosporin on it. I'm just wondering if I should put her down.
I feel horrible and responsible for not integrating them properly. But things flooded here and I wanted them dry. I'll get over my own issues to deal with the bird. Now what do I do?????
