I was driving into town and passed what appeared to be a huddled up a fence, crouched over young turkey. I passed it and it didn't even move so in all of 2 seconds I decided to go back and see if it was hit and injured. So I turned around pulled up to it, all the while it didn't budge a bit. I walked up to it and simply picked it up. It was a peahen. At least I think it's a girl. I had a dog carrier in my truck (habit) and placed it in there. It didn't have any blood on it that I could tell. I went to all of the very few houses around the area and a few said it had been there since Sunday and that they thought it was "just a turkey". I just couldn't believe that these people saw her out there since Sunday and did nothing! If I saw an animal hunkered over and not moving I darn sure would have been out there long before 3 days! So with noone claiming it, I brought it home.

So now I have her in a nice, clean isolation pen with gamebird feed and water. Upon closer inspection, her toes and I guess what would be her ankles? on both feet are all torn up. She looks as if she was either rolled by a vehicle or simply just thrown out of a vehicle. Her wounds aren't extensive that I can tell, but she is favoring her right foot, which appears to be the worse off of the two. But it appears that NOTHING is broken-she does stand on her feet. She's not scared of me at all (maybe because she's in shock) but I can pet her and she seems interested in the food, however she's much more interested in sleeping. I have her in a 2.5x4x3 high isolation pen. Do you think that will be sufficient for a few days? I'm thinking the more isolated that she is, the less apt she'll be to spaz out and just let her body recover.

Any suggestions as to what to give her i.e. vitamins, scrambled egg, etc? Hubby and I have only talked about having peafowl but I never did too much research on it. Any suggestions for helping her along to a speedier recovery will be greatly appreciated. O'well, any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Here she/it is...

Don't know a thing about peahens- but I do know that it was her lucky day... Looks like you are doing everything right. Keep trying to find some kind of food she likes- I'd push yogurt. Has she had any of the water? Have you seen her droppings? I am sure others will chime in. Good luck!

If she's been out there for days, I'd say getting some water into her is the most important thing. If she's dehydrated it won't be too long before she starts to shut down. Have you seen her drink anything?

Chicks... It is a young male and it looks like it might be wormy. Feel its breast and see if it has any meat on it, if it is real thin it may need something.. You can try Wazine as it might help or you may need something better like Panacure . You can get these at most feed stores in one form or another. Let the forum know how it does.. connerhills

Since she/he seems to be tame, I would hold a little cup of water right under its beak. If you dip the beak, chances are it will naturally drink. I have given water this way to very sick chickens and had them drink....Good luck! Keep us posted.

what a beautiful bird. i hope you hae some luck nursing it back to health.
good for you for picking him/her up!

I just ran out there to check on him and I got him to drink a few drops of water from my finger, but he may not know what a chicken waterer is

so maybe I should just put maybe a shallow tupperware bowl out there with water in it?

but he did drink a little...I was splashing the water around to hopefully get him to realize it's there.

I felt his chest and he does seem to have meat on his bones, however, I'm not exactly how sure how meaty a peafowl is supposed to be. I'll watch for poo and check it for worms. I do have the Wazine 17 on hand. If it's determined that he has worms, is the dosage the same as for chickens? Which I have as 1 oz. per gallon of water for 24 hours.

Hubby is glad to hear it's a boy, I was ready to run out and buy an incubator if it happened to lay a few eggs!

On reason it seems so tame is that it is weak and will not eat much or drink. It is not far from dieing. If it gets to the point that it staggers around and cant stand up its death is soon.. This will actually be from starving to death.. I would suggest you have a vet look at him if you have one or get some panacure it him soon. wazine may work but it should be given to him soon. Hope this helps ...connerhills

Give him some poy- visol without iron and sugarwater, like a tablespoon sugar pre cup of water ever 30 minutes to an hour, this help a peachick i had that was stressed from me just driving her 12 miles to my home.

What i did was put the mixture in a spoon and hold it up to her beak and she woudls sip on it, in 8 hours she was fine and started eating, i would have lost her had i not done this.

Good luck on your find, i bet it will be just fine with some TLC.

Yes a male yearling india blue, get some high protien starter gamebird or turkey, wet a small cup with warm water, see if you can get him to eat it, need a new batch mixed fresh , will spoil fast. i would worm with safe guard for goats, wazine just kills round worms
