Found injured peahen...need advice/pics. update!

i have him in my lap because i need somre more help-typing w/one hand.

one of his toenails is broken right at the base of the toe and hanging on by just a tiny bit more skin than a thread. i cxant get scissors in to finish the job for fear of hitting meat. there are no vets ouy here rthat look at birds. any suggestions? i know this hurts him cuz it is bending under when he walks.

I would try to get his strength back up before worming, if he has been there 3 days already he needs some calories to get him going, then i would worm him.
The dose is 3 CC's per gallon of water and you make fresh every day.

Toe surgery is done...that's hard holding a peacock and removing a toenail-I needed 3 hands for sure. Phew! The top was ripped away and I'd say it was held by about 25% on the very bottom...poor guy. I hope I did right by removing it-I didn't see any other alternative.

I'm doing the Poly-visol/sugar water but he's not really going for the water. Should I just put a drop of the poly visol in his mouth for good measure? What do you guys think? Or should I just wait and see what happens overnight?

Do you have an empty syringe? Put some of the poly-visol solution in that & carefully squirt it to the side of his mouth -- do not squirt it directly down the center of his throat or it'll go down his trachea & you'll choke him.

I hope you can save him. You're a good person to be trying your best to do so.

Thanks! Yep, I've got syringes. I went out there and put 2 drops mixed with a tiny bit of water in his mouth. He is either really patient or exhausted because he let me do it. The poor guy probably just wishes that I would leave him be

I'll do just that. I wish he would sit down to sleep though...he's just sleeping standing up at this point. Hopefully once it gets dark out he'll try and lay down.

Thanks to everyone for all of your help! Keep your fingers crossed for him! p.s. he is standing on his "surgery" foot now so it must feel better.

I have a weak hen, and for her I put a drop of poly-vi-sol under her tongue, let her rest for a few, then give her another drop. I really worry about her choking on it. After 2 days of this, she just lets me pry her beak open and do it.

It must be working, because she finally ate yesterday. And like a greedy pig, too.

Hope your rescue does as well!!

to you for not just passing him by like everyone else. At least now he's warm and safe.

I hope that the little peacock gets better! When I first got peafowl I noticed my peahen wasn't eating much anymore and looked thin so we had to squirt medicine in her mouth. The next day she was eating like normal and it didn't take her long to take back her title as the biggest peahen! Good luck with the peacock!

Try honey! we dilute it 50/50 with warm water and will trickle it on their tongues, usually they get a taste for it. Also with sick chickens we feed yogurt and even wet cat food, have also done mashed potatoes too (can hide all sorts of medicine and vitamins in mashed potatoes). how warm is it where you have him? can you maybe give him a heat lamp to hang out under?

It's about 50 degrees where I have him now. Yeah, I can give him a heat lamp. I'll run out and do that...I guess I figured he didn't need it, but perhaps you're right. I'll do that...he's still sleeping standing up. I wish he would just lay down and relax his legs.
