Need to vent my BYC peeps. I only wanted to spend about $500 to build my coop. My brother in law is a custom carpenter and my DH insisted he build it cause "it would be done right". Well...he wont use recycled anything because it is hard to work with and would take time to gather it all. Time is something we dont have because I jumped in and bought the girls thinking I could buy a pre-fab. Those just dont work well and never hold as many as they say they do. Dont get me wrong. I love what he is building BUTTTTTTT

At last look at my spreadsheet I was up to $1437.00!!!! HOLY CHICKEN POOP BATMAN!!

We are in a hard push to get it done in less than 2 weeks since the girls are 5 weeks old today and still in the brooder in my garage. I think they will out grow their 8 sq ft pretty dang soon!
The stress of working full time, the BIL only working on the coop on weekends and the growing girls is making me

That's all, just had to get that off my chest....I think i feel better now...

Well, if it makes you feel any better, we named our coop "The Alaskan Cruise" because when we figured out what we put into it, we could have taken one. Spent wayyyyyy too much money. Have wayyyyy too many chickens. Spend wayyyyy too much on feed. I probably was not a good person to answer!! LOL!!!

You'll enjoy them when it is all done.

I feel your pain. It's just amazing how fast those costs can add up.

I thought our costs would be minimal sine we were using an already build shed. But when it came time to build the run, you'd think my DH was trying to keep in bulls instead of chickens. There was no way did we need 6x6 upright to hold up a wire roof. I finally convinced him that 2x4s would work just fine.

I hope you can get your coop built before your chicks go stir crazy!

If I could have I would have spent alot more on materials but after reading threads on here about the outrageous price tags I went the recycled route. When it is all said and done and your ladies are happily scratching around you will hopefully forget the price.

I am still in the wishing for and what if stage of chicken ownership. Unless I can get the HOA covenants changed, thats where I will stay also.

that being said, my husband is an engineer, so I know when it comes time to build - it will be over built and expensive.

Hey I know how you feel - I bought $600 worth of lumber hoping to built a new dog kennel and chicken coup...well my kennel is nearly done and I'm out of wood! haha I'm going to have to drop another $500 on wood for the coop! (my wife's gonna kill me)

I'd show you a pic of my nearly finished kennel as my coup design is very similar (to match of course) but I'm a news to BYC and can't post photos as of yet.

Cheers,
Ryan

I feel your pain. I wanted to build a coop and recycled materials were OK with me.. but hubby didnt want it to look "cheap" and homemade, so we have a guy that builds them around here making ours for about $700 bucks. Then I realized the run wont be big enough so I am going to have to build a little bigger one. Plus rearranging things in the yard to put it where we want, the brooder materials, lamps, feed bedding, it is definately adding up. I just hope the end result is what we hoped for

. Good luck! It will be worth it in the end.. and an arguement over how something is built isnt really worth it either.. so I just did what he wanted to do. He was surprisingly easy to go along with the idea of chickens in the first place so Im not going ot push my luck!
But IMO some of the nicer ones I have seen on here were recycled

I am totally in the same boat/coop! and we are using a lot of recycled materials (the entire frame, roof and floor was a play fort/play ground) we are still spending a ton. A lot of it is my husband "needing" tools to complete the job. But still... I was hoping to keep it at about $500....and I don;t even want to figure what we are at for all our chickens and supplies. I am really hoping we can get this thing finished this week. My girls are only 4 weeks but they are nearly fully feathered and seem to be BORED! I also want my laundry room chicken dust free again....
