Beginning to think maybe my DH is smarter than I think when he said I'm gonna need to work 3 jobs for my coop and chickens, even using recycled materials!

WELL...I WISH I HADN'T READ ALL OF THAT! I HAVE BANTAMS AND WON'T KEEP ANY BUT THE HENS (BECAUSE OF NEIGHBORS AND STUFF) BUT JUST WANTED THEM AS PETS ONLY. I HAVE GOTTEN THE HUTCH, BUT STILL HAVE TO PUT IT TOGETHER AND AM NOW WONDERING IF I HAVE THE STRENGTH TO STAPLE HARDWARE CLOTH TO WOOD ANYMORE. I WORK WHERE THERE IS SCRAP PIECES OF LUMBER AND I'M A RIGGER FROM WAAAAYY BACK, SO I WILL HAVE TO KEEP IT HIDDEN FROM THE PUBLIC EYE, I'M SURE. WHAT'S WRONG WITH ALL OF US? (WE JUST LOVE THOSE BIRDS!)

You know what they say, "a carpenter is only as good as his tools".

Well at least he will have them for the next coop he builds and if you are like the rest of us, you will need another one or at the vary least build on to the one you have.

its only a 4x6 but everything brand new (including the STAINLESS STEEL hinges he insisted on cause they will LAST FOREVER ($10 a peice thank you very much). And it is solid as a rock and weighs about 500 lbs. It is also being built in my brother in laws shop about 2 blocks from here so....can you say rented fork lift to move the stupid thing!

If you check out my BYC page you can see all the pictures I have taken step by step.

Wow! That first egg you guys finally get ought to be bronzed!

We used as much recycled wood as possible. My father-in-law had a stack of old lumber from his shed that he lost in hurricane Katrina. He also had some old tin. We only had to buy the wire, the hardware (hinges, locks, etc.) and about $150 worth of wood. Our coop/run is 10x20 and we have 15 chickens to put in it in a week or so.

At least once your coop is done, "you know it's done right". You'll have to come up with a very fancy, hoity-toity name for your coop, like Tajmahal, or something!

I think when they lay the first egg, I am going to sneek it and paint it GOLD and put in back in the nest box, maybe they will take the hint and lay me some golden eggs!
