We are a third grade class who has decided to raise and brood some chickens as part of the learning in our class.

We got the eggs from our teacher's dad's farm. We started with 11 eggs and so far 5 have hatched and we have one more pipping.

ONe was born less healthy though. He was the first to hatch ane he had an exposed yolk sack. We left him in the incubator and he seemed to do ok -- He has absorbed it all except a pea. Ina nother post a member told he though that would be ok. But now there is second problem.

He doesn't seem to be able to straighten his neck. HE gets up and tries to walk and his neck stays pointed toward the ground and he just drags it. He seems to be moving less and less.

Here is a picture of him.

Is ther enaything we can do to help him?

I am not an expert, but if I had that chick, I would cull it. I know that some people have a chick with a crooked neck, and that is fine. I am more concerned for the yolk sack that did not absorb.
I hope that someone else can give you advise that works for you. All life deserves a chance.

I dunno just yet. I heard that if you use a q-tip with warm water, you can carefully push the bottom back in and let it seal up. It may straighten its neck as its just hatched so I would try to give this little one a chance!

Well, I'm not ready to cull him yet. He is healthy except for the drying up yolk sack and the bent neck.

If I nudge hsi neck straight he seems fine -- but as soon as I let go -- it curls back up.

He doesn't stand. He just kind of scoots backwards.

He was not like this yesterday -- Yesterday he would stand up and walk around.

He is doing a little better -- i have been holding him off and on and helping him straighten neck -- after holding him for awhile -- the he seems to be able to keep it straight before it curls up again.

Can he eat or drink?? If he can't then he is going to starve to death. IMO the chick was hatched with some serious issues and I would cull. Sorry, not what you want to hear, but better then starving to death.

We had one kind of like that a couple weeks ago. He was bent to the left and shaped like egg, kind of. LOL!
Hard to explain, but it didn't make it, lasted about 3-4 days then crapped out.
Hope urs does better, but be prepared.
Take care,
Angela

I'm am brand new to this, BUT...

do you vitamins in the water? From what I've read, sometimes they are hatched with a vitamin deficiency.
I use Avia Charge 2000 for all my chicks-it mixes in the water.

Is your chick eating and drinking????

I know this is terribly worrisome and I hope it pulls through...

I have heard that extra vitamins can help. I had one that developed crook neck when she was a month or so old and she got so bad I eventually had to put her down. Only my opinion, but I would have put her down sooner if I had known. It wa heatbreaking to watch her.

Unfortunately ou little chick went to the giant coop inthe sky last night.

It was for the bst. We have 6 very healthy and energetic peeps now running around. Started with 11 eggs -- 8 hatched -- One died while hatching - abd then this one died -- Three still incubating. Will turn off incuabtor tomorrow with the kids.

Not a bad hatch- overall. Considering the challenges of raising chicks with in the structure of a classroom environmnet.
